Any info on fentanyl? I was just changed from oxycOnti 30 2x day with percocet10 x2 a day for breakthrough.I was 5 days short with pills so I am being punished and scolded as an abuser.I have a two level lumbar fusion as well as herniated discs in cervix as well as an autoimmune disease called Ankylosing Spondilytis which causes severe pain in the sacroiliac joint , ankles, sturnum etc. How does Fenanyl stand up against oxycodone? Can Fentanyl 50mcg patch be abused?

I'm moving this to what I think is the appropriate forum for it; you'll get better responses there.

From what ive read (have never done Fentanyl & had/have chances to do it but wont), Fentanyl is extremely powerful & can put out your lights if you dont have a decent tolerance. 60mgs of oxy a day plus 20mgs of percs a day isnt bad. Fentanyl to most isnt very recreational.........

Did your doctor switch you over?

Heya, welcome to BDD.

Fentanyl, like most opioids, can be abused but as TLB said it is very dangerous. It's extremely potent, and patches contain a lot of fentanyl - your patch is designed to release 50mcg/hr for 72 hours, and has some extra too. The total amount of fentanyl should be somewhere on the patch. Your options for abusing it are fairly limited, depend on the type of patch (gel reservoir or plastic matrix) and are very risky.

As a chronic pain patient too, abusing your meds is a slippery slope.. I don't want to preach at all, but if you are already getting into trouble for abusing your meds, what would happen if they cut you off and you couldn't get opioids prescribed at all? Or if you pushed your tolerance too high?

Many people don't find fentanyl hugely euphoric, either. It is good for pain though as it delivers a steady supply constantly into your bloodstream, avoiding the peaks and troughs that comes with taking tablets. Apart from that, people's responses vary - some find one opioid has better analgesia, others prefer a different one. This is something to work out with your doctor.

As someone who has had 3 lumbar fusions, I can say that while fentanyl is extremely potent and effective extended release medication. Like effie said there is little to no euphoria in fentanyl. Another drawback is having to plan for how long patches take to kick in when switching them so you dont go into fent withdrawal waiting. That and the need for specialized covering (I use tegaderm patch covers) to keep them from falling off or becoming saturated in water in the shower.

I prefer methadone or mscontin over fentanyl patches however after my 1st and 3rd surgeries they stuck me with it.

Also the brand of patches can make a signficant difference, as some don't feel as potent or long lasting as others. Some have an abuse proof adhesive matrix while some still have the gel reservoir (which can be easily abused).

Be careful, I know its for pain, but fentanyl is the easiest way to OD and die...100x as strong as morphine!
