Fentanyl for opiate maintenance?

I have been thinking about this for quite some time now, figured i would make a post about it to hopefully get some answers. I did some searching here and google searches, hopefully it hasn't been discussed yet.

Why isnt fentanyl given as an option besides methadone? In my opinion, both drugs have alot in common. Fentanyl patches (the non-gel ones especially) are hard to abuse, right? Also, there is not really much of a euphoric high at all from it. And in my past experiences with the patches, i had no urges whatsoever of getting high by seeking other drugs, etc.

Any thoughts or comments on this subject?

Do. Not. do.

If you want maintenance yeou need bupe or methadone. Bupe would be my recommendation because methadone takes a long painful time to come off.

The non-gel ones are less abusable but it is certainly still possible - people smoke the plastic (ick) or you can stick them inside your mouth. Fentanyl is an incredibly strong opioid and abusing a patch when you are used to maintenance could eassily kill.. plus I imagine cost is a factor, plus it's far less easily supervised (you could just whip the patch off and sell it then get high on your opioid of choice..)

It wouldn't have the blocking properties of buprenorphine and a lot of people do find it recreational - especially comapred to methadone, so far more temptation to abuse it. High dose methadone saturates your receptors and can block in that way too; I don't think you could use fentanyl in the same way. Tapering down with patches would be a lot harder too than going down in mls of methadone or mgs (or less) of buprenorphine.

Mostly speculation, but I can think of many reasons..

I presume you are a fan given your username?

I actually had to use fent for maintenance for a few weeks in the 90's when the real H dried up. The fent kept the sick off, but didn't really get me high. I certainly didn't feel any euphoria, either. It also made my vision blurry for a few hours after each shot. I was not impressed, but at least it kept me from getting dopesick, and held me over until the H came back around.

Terrible idea. Very potent, terrible, long withdrawals, and raises tolerance very fucking fast. I also find it very euphoric and noddy, esp IV at the hospital (would never IV an in unprofessional setting by a nurse, doctor, or surgeon), snorted after the gel is cooked to powder, and vaping the gel or powder. Most intense smoked opioid known to man IMO. Up there with the intensity of shooting potent or heroin or oxymorphone.
