Fent patch relief vs complications?

Hey guys, hows everyone? I have a question here that should be fairly easy. I know what I should do, so this isnt a question of ethics, this is a question of practicality and can it be done and get the relief I need. Ok.. So if anyone recalls I was recently (over a month now) been put on the Fent patches and originally the dose was 100mcg/hr but we realized that it really should have been more like 70mcg/hr or 50mcg/hr and we are working to go down that road, I am on my 2nd box of 75mcg's/hr patches. Im having a very painful time right now and in fact just got released from the hospital and I do not have to many dilaudid's to use in the interm so I was wondering this. I am in a shit load of pain and have been for the last few days. With almost no dillies left until I can see my Dr again in a week, can I add a second 75mcg/hr patch to get more relief? or perhaps even cut one patch in half and wear that for a day?

I understand the first thing everyone is going to say 150mcg/hr is alot can you handle that, the answer is yes definitely. The question is more of, will adding the extra give me more relief? or will the absorption be so long that it really wouldnt help much short term? I dont plan on keeping it that way, so once I take the second patch off, will I start withdrawing from just adding 1 extra patch for a day or two? I certainly dont want the after effects to be worse then the current pain, so would I be setting my self up for a withdraw situation if the second patch is only on for a day or two? I know Fent has a very short 1/2 life so I know it wont hang around to long after I go back to just one patch, but Im just not sure if its worth the effort relief vs withdraw or no real benefit. Any ideas? So again this isnt an ethics question this is a question of practicality and relief vs, the rest.

Thanks!

Not trying to bump.. Mods, I was just rereading the BDD rules again, and I think this thread falls under the following...

Can this be moved appropriately or is it OK to leave it here? If I don't hear from anyone on this Ill PM the mods to double check and have moved if need be.. I am hoping to get an answer soon as my pain is driving me nuts :(

Hi painenduser,

This question is fine here :) there is some overlap between the forums, but we'll happily move a thread if we think it is best suited elsewhere :)

It can take 12 hours for the fentanyl from a new patch to reach peak/stable levels in the blood, so you may well be waiting a while before you get any relief from it.. I'm so sorry you are in this position. I really understand wanting to slap on another patch, but not only would you likely not get relief for quite a while, it would mess up your taper and might leave you in more pain later on if your doctor doesn't compensate.. I don't know if you'll get WDs as such, but you will certainly bump back down to the level of pain you are on at the moment when you remove it, possibly with some added discomfort - I don't know..

Is there no way you can ring your doctor and explain, and get some more Dilaudid?

Good luck, I'm sorry you're having such a rough time <3

Hi Effie!! I always love when you reply to my posts, you always have a way of making the pain seem much less then it is just from your sincere concern and sometimes that is the best medicine for pain one can ever have. No need to the meds, just slap and effie on your arm with some paper tape and your good to go! lol <3

Seriouslt though, your right and in the midst of the pain what you mentioned is what I was hoping I wouldnt hear but I needed to hear it. The after effects probably would be worse then the current pain so I just stuck it out. I cant call my Dr because he only has office hours 1 time a week in my area and you cant have a Dr "call in" a narc. So I'm just gonna hang on it. As a side note, this all came about because I just got home from the hospital on Thursday. I went in because, remember the week I was having a tough time and I posted in the Dark Side? Well soon after that, I had serious breathing issues due to a chest infection I had been battling for weeks prior, seen 2 different docs, had IV anti biotics ect. Well last Saturday I finally went back to the hospital and they admitted me for almost a week due to bronchitis, pneumonia, and as I found out the other day MRSA in my sputum. I had MRSA in my blood a year ago after surgery and they took care of it, now somehow probably due to my weak immune system from my liver disease I have it in my lungs. Im good now, they had me on serious anti-biotics and they helped me manage my pain while I was there too. But they only let you leave with so much of your pain meds so they really didn't give me enough to last more then a day :( I still have my patches but nothing for the bad times. I will just have to hold out until Thursday. Im not going to risk slapping the extra patch on (esp when I can tape an Effie on!) lol So anyway I am feeling better still a little beat up from all the meds they had me on. I really thank you for the reply.. Hope all is well with you and the folks over in the DS, Ill be sure to stop over soon and say Hi and update everyone on that post of mine.

Thanks again Effie!!!
