I could tell you my adventures, but there's no use
Hey guys. Sorry if this is in the wrong spot, and also, if you are a guy and get squeamish about female talk, then you might not wanna read. There's your disclaimer :)

I was wondering if there are any other females that have experience with long term drug use (specifically heroin usage,) and having weird "female" stuff happen. Example-inability to conceive. Also, "normal" female cycles have certain signs (like certain type of discharge when ovulating etc,) and I noticed that until I got clean I did not have any of these types of variations. Now that I am clean I am noticing certain things like signs and symptoms of ovulation including the one sided ovarian pain that can go along with it. My question is this.. anyone else think that the drugs shut down their reproductive organs? And noticed that they seem to be "working" again after some clean time/substantial clean time?

Thank you in advance and sorry if this is TMI.

I'm no expert as it's not a drug I use, but I'm pretty sure heroin is known to mess with reproductive stuff and menstruation. Well done on getting clean and having regular cycle stuff happening again, btw.. :)

deltakappamu I can tell you that I was on a pretty strong dose of the Fentanyl patch, witch is a type of opiate. I decided to get off the patch because I was have a lot of female problems! My hormones were so out of whack, no periods, stayed emotional & freaking acne @ 37 yrs old... just to name a few things I noticed. I am still on oxycodone, but from the research I have done it seems to be the long acting opiates that tend to cause these problems or abuse of them. As soon as I started dropping the dose of Fentanyl my period returned, the acne & emotional issues went away. So yes I think opiates def effect us & our reproductive systems. From what I have read it can take a while for everything to return to normal once you are clean, especially if you used for a long time. Try taking a multi vitamin, maybe a little extra vitamin C & eating as health as possible. There is not a lot of info out there about this although it is apparently pretty common with opiates & females. I looked for weeks before I found anything on the internet. I hope this helps. If I can be of any further assistance please let me know.

Hi Jennie.. thank you for the reply. I am currently eating clean, taking vitamins and daily exercise. I usually am pretty healthy when I am clean but when I am getting high I treat my body like shit, so that may also be part of it combined with abusing opiates.

Before I started using, when I was 14, I was pregnant. That was the only time in my life that I have ever conceived a baby. I did not carry the child due to the fucked up circumstances of how it happened in the first place. Started using not too long after that and not that I should have ever had a child while I was using, but I had unprotected sex over the years a lot and never turned up pregnant. Now that I am clean I have looked back at that wondered if I have done permanent damage to my organs or something.

I went to get my annual last year and I asked the Dr if she noticed anything was abnormal (I believe I said "are my reproductive organs a dry barren wasteland yet?") and she laughed and said everything was fine.

I used to work in healthcare and don't remember anything in school or any experience with this when I worked in the field. And you are correct, there is little info online.. so I appreciate your response with your experience :)

I always wondered about this while I was using opiates. I couldn't orgasm and knew things were changing down there (as in the muscles were more relaxed and such) and always suspected maybe this even affected my reproductive system. That's pure speculation though.

If you're curious as to whether or not everything works you can always do an ovulation test. They sell them next to pregnancy tests in just about any store. I used them while trying to conceive our daughter and was quickly able to nail down my cycle to a T. If you're ovulating then chances are everything is working well. It will likely help if you are no longer using too. I have been sober since 2008 and while it took a minute my body returned to normal eventually.

Thank you so much for your response. I always felt dead down there while using. Orgasm was out of the question. "ugh, just get off of me" haha

I did buy an ovulation kit as advised by the dr who did my last annual. I never used it though because it seemed like a lot of commitment at the time :/

Now that I am clean I should probably do one. Thank you again for your response :)

Yeah, "dead" is a great way to describe the feeling (or lack thereof) when you're sexing on opiates, haha.

Definitely try the kit during your next ovulation period (I had to guesstimate in the beginning and started about four days before and ended up getting a smiley face--or a "yes"--after about a week of testing) and there are also tons of apps you can download that chart your cycle to the Nth degree. If you really want to get scientific and exact with it you can look up how to check your basal body temperature and get it down to hours of the egg "dropping" (for lack of better words). I could never figure that shit out though, heh.
