It does not have to be an evolutionary advantage, it just must not be an evolutionary disadvantage.
We carry many traits that are of no evolutionary benefit. religion is a subset of social organization and our social organization is very conducive to defense from predators, as is our penchant for specialization.
Story telling helps to reinforce social bonding, and psychedelic experience may help with both story telling and social bonding.

However with the fentanyl deaths, almost all powdered substances have come under the lens of distrust: "are there traces of Fent in this magic dust?", "this is pre-fentanyl cocaine, I promise", etc...
