Feeling lost in a world full of signs

I've felt the exact same way... including the "I'm the only one who feels this way" bit.

I have a tremendous amount of guilt about the way I live. I eat great food and I use up a ton of electricity and gas. It's despicable! I can hardly live with myself! And yet, it is part of the game we play, the game of sustaining ourselves in society.
However, we can learn over time to distinguish what is necessary and what is not. Live simply if that is your wish. Eat simply. It just so happens that in most cases the things that are good for the earth are also good for you... But don't let the guilt bring you down. Also, listen to Incubus and read their lyrics while listening to their songs. I'm serious. If you're unfamiliar with them, seek out "Redefine," "The Warmth," "A Certain Shade of Green," "Version," and "Drive" first before listening to the rest of their songs.

i was where you are about ten years ago. i even wanted to be a comic book artist! again i echo others when they say you are certainly not alone. :)

i think it was ghandi who said that you need to know the rules before you can break them properly. this is so true. get some life experience. it can seem to be very frustrating at times. vent your creative juices as you mature so that when you're in the right place to unleash your creativity to the world, it is fucking fantastic.

it took me a while, but i currently work in an environment where i actually help people, and i have just completed my first short film.

for now, focus on making those around you laugh/think. it is an awesome way to workout your creativity and at the same time generate some good kharma.

fuck yeah!

Hey.

I know it can sometimes look as though humans are destructive, consuming the Earth and leading it into ruin, but if you can see the patterns in nature, of how animals and trees are performing a function which then leads to something else, how are humans excluded from this?

What i like to ask people is "do you think we as humans are on the Earth, or we ARE the earth" Just as a tree knows how to grow as if it is being led by some force external to itself, we humans are absolutely no different from trees. We are a part of the earth, we don't simply just live on the earth.

This is only my idea of the world, and i cannot say with certainty that it is correct, and it may well be wrong.

But what it helps me with, is having an absolute love for humans, and indeed any part of the earth. We are performing some purpose, with the same amazing complexity as those insects, or birds. Don't ask me what that purpose is, but i know it is something.

That's not to say that a person that cares for the world should just give up and let their fellow man rape it, but perhaps people like yourself are a part of the system that can eventually lead the greater population in certain directions. It's as if some people in the human population can act like the brains of the entire group, and indeed creative works are one of the most significant ways that our societies are led. Politicians don't change the world, artists do...

You only have to look back in history and see the Beatles performing in Germany not all THAT long after the animosities of war between Britain and Germany. The Beatles were influencing the way young German people viewed the world, even when there may have been some bad blood between the nations, and there is absolutely no way that a politician at the time could have done that.

You have already reinforced my aim to be less toxic on the earth, and if you keep engaging people with your art, or even conversation, you will be influencing the humans on this earth.

I am glad to have people that think like you on the earth. Keep working towards your creative goals!

all the best

Is it really our fault that we are destroying the planet? We were born with this body that must be fed to stay alive. We were born to a species that can adapt to any environment and reproduce rapidly. As populations continue to grow, humans continue in this complex system (civilization) we have developed to eat. There are not enough animals/plants around for everyone to live in the woods and hunt and gather, at least not without killing absolutely everything.

Some believe that humans are around so that the universe has a consious being aware of it (the universe). If an asteroid is heading towards Earth, the only hope for the planet and all the life on it is that humans will deter it somehow.

This is the story of our times. "Lost in a world full of signs". I love that. But at first i thought it meant those weird signs, like coincidences and fateful incidents which shape our lives.

i agree. i feel like the only way out is to end myself - i dont believe this is some kind of individual fucked up thing, because that is also nature isnt it - self-regulation of the species as a whole. i predict mass suicide in the future. when the shit hits the fan people like us who are so sensitive to the unseen currents wont be so alienated anymore.

* I know this sounds incredibly emo or gothy or whatever, but it still a strong side of it that i come from. and im sure as fuck not alone, not by a million! (or maybe even a billion?)

What if I should discover that the poorest of the beggars and the most impudent of offenders are all within me, and that I stand in need of the alms of my own kindness; that I myself am the enemy who must be loved-- what then?
- Carl Jung

now this is something to think about. it sounds so easy, but yet seems so daunting and difficult. to love oneself? craziness! :\

I'm not an artist, but I feel exactly the same about the rest of what you're saying. I always think that maybe it's better for us all to be destroyed, because no matter what we do we're hurting the Earth in some way. I, too, feel trapped in this cycle of doing meaningless tasks to get by, and stifling my creativity and passions. It's come to the point where I have no passion left, and need anti-psychotics to function. I think my problem isn't mental, it's spiritual - probably we are both disconnected from the source, and the only true way to come home is to die. I have thoughts about suicide, too.

Work still leaves time to volunteer, though, like on the weekends or evenings or whenever you've got a little time. You might as well pick an area and make a difference on the planet while you're here. Who knows? It might help the Earth, and yourself. Me, I'm off to volunteer today... I'm planting trees! Doing things like this makes me feel better, like I'm doing some kind of sacred work.

^ That's the spirit!

Whether sentient existence is a gift or a curse, a cosmic master plan or a cosmic joke, either way there's no harm in making the most of it, and helping others do the same.

I find I feel most 'OK', most at peace with the world and with myself, when I'm passionate about something. Lose the fire in the belly, and life quickly become a chore.

I think of Bruce Willis' character from the movie 'Unbreakable', sitting at his breakfast table staring bleakly ahead, the spoon quivering in his hand. But then he discovered, by encountering someone very much unlike him, that he had a very special gift, and that his mission in life was to use that gift to help people. And his depression lifted. I think we're all like that, inside. The media and consumer culture groom us to just seek a 'normal life', and stroke our pleasure centers as needed. But if we succeed at that, we feel empty, because the media lied to us: that's not the way to find meaning in life at all. Meaning in life is found by daring to push boundaries.

"Lose the fire in the belly, and life quickly become a chore."

thats very true. maybe the usefulness of anger/quarrels? as they say in the bible... "So because thou art lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spew thee out of my mouth."

*that said, an excess of passion is obviously fairly destructive, like a ball of fire with no control...
