Feds: Vegas doctor posed as dead patient to get drugs

A suspended Las Vegas physician has been charged with fraudulently obtaining controlled substances for his own addiction by posing for more than two years as one of his dead patients.

Dr. Kent Swaine, 50, whose medical license was once revoked by the state over his drug use, was arrested Wednesday by federal drug agents assigned to a joint task force.

At Swaine’s initial appearance late Thursday, U.S. Magistrate Judge Cam Ferenbach ordered him released on his own recognizance while he faces the charges.

According to a criminal complaint, Swaine wrote prescriptions for himself under the name of Alexander Hyt, a patient who died of pancreatic cancer on Aug. 5, 2011, and posed as Hyt at pharmacies to pick up the drugs, mostly painkillers and anti-depressants.

Swaine unlawfully obtained the prescription medication this way for more than two years after Hyt’s death until last December, the complaint alleged.

Swaine, who was suspended by the Nevada Board of Medical Examiners in Jan. 31, was described in the complaint as specializing in chiropractic medicine, plastic surgery and vascular surgery at his 5380 S. Rainbow Blvd. office.

The complaint said Swaine was licensed to practice medicine in Nevada in July 2001, but his license was revoked in October 2008.

He was reinstated by the medical board in June 2011 on the condition he abstain from using drugs and alcohol and not prescribe controlled substances for himself and his family.

The board later learned that he violated the terms of his reinstatement, including impersonating his late patient, and obtained his suspension. The impersonation scheme was uncovered when a pharmacy complained to the medical board, according to the complaint.

Swaine tested positive Jan. 30 for “amphetamines, benzodiazepine and opiates,” the complaint alleged.

In an interview with drug task force officers in July, Swaine admitted that he wrote and filled prescriptions for hydrocodone, hydromorphone, methadone, alprazolam and other controlled substances in Hyt’s name.

He also admitted that he treated patients while he was “high,” the complaint alleged.

My family friend her doctor years lost his license for doing stuff like this and many other schemes for his pill addiction. He would write scripts of painkillers to older ladies mostly then call them a day later telling them to stop taking them because he thinks they could possibly be allergic to them or whatever excuse he had. Then he would drive to the patients house in his car to pick the meds up, take them without reimbursing them or anything and drive off. My friend told us at dinner once how he did this with her script of oxycodone previously and we all laughed thinking why would a doctor prescribe you meds then all of a sudden once you've filled them call you up tell you to stop taking them then drive over and pick them up. We kind of dismissed it as her being a bit confused until a few months later she got Demerol prescribed to her and she picked them up brought them home only to get a call from her doctor again saying how many of those have you taken?! Don't take anymore of those you don't need them! blah blah blah. So once again he drives over picks up all the pills then drives off and of course my friend is going to trust the doctor shes had for the past 15-20 years if he says don't take these something could happen of course shell listen to him. Anyways she told me how she got Demerol prescribed the day she got the script and she said ill give you a few if you want I have a script for 90 pills.

She came over for supper a day later and said I had to give the pills back after I paid for them my doctor because he didn't think they were good for me to be taking so he came over and grabbed them, too bad I already paid the 70 bucks for the pills when he realised I shouldn't be taking Demerol. That's when I thought dam 2 times? this guy has to be an addict himself because that's what I would do if I was an addict doctor in need of pills. I told her to phone the cops the next day but the next day we see on the paper her doctor has gone missing with his car parked at the hospital but no sign of him anywhere so his family and practice were worried wondering what happened to him. My friend phoned the cops and told them what has been happening with her doctor taking her pills and how she figures he is taking them himself because of an addiction. They write this all down because they too agree something isn't right with the way he went about things.

A day or 2 pass then he is found with no clothes wandering the beach late at night with no idea who he was or what was going on, the cops were phoned by nearby residents with reports of a naked man wandering the beach. It turned out he went psychotic from taking too many pills and im not certain but I think the 90 Demerol that were for my friend played a big part in this psychotic break he had. He spent a long time in a psychiatric hospital recovering and I doubt he'll ever be the same plus he lost his medical license for good. I cant imagine with all the hard work and time you put into becoming a doctor how you go on after losing your medical license. Many say how would you even risk it but I know first hand when your an addict you don't see clear you just want the fix your don't think of the consequences for your actions when searching for your fix. Also once you get away with something enough you start to get "cocky". Either way its happening more and more.

Lol that's why I said is this DR house? Haha that was an awesome episode where he is all desperate for his pills. House wasn't very smart about it either though like most junkies it don't matter how smart you are the shit will get you doing stupid things.

I don't think it was cancelled per say I think it ran its course and it ended on a very good note. The ending was awesome kinda sad but still shows how clever house was. That show ran for 8 seasons with 20-25 episodes each season an hour long.
