Stop resisting!
The U.S. federal government's Department of Health and Human Services seems about ready to award exclusive rights to apply marijuana as a medical therapeutic. You read that correctly: "exclusive rights."

Now, I don't think of myself as a conspiracy theorist. But when the federal government keeps taking actions that, even when considered separately but especially when viewed together, all seem to be part of a bigger plan to pave the way for the pharmaceutical industry to bulldoze the cottage medical marijuana industry, I start getting antsy.

"We find it hypocritical and incredible that on the one hand, the U.S. Department of Justice is persecuting cannabis patient associations, asserting that the federal government regards marijuana as having absolutely no medical value, despite overwhelming clinical evidence," said Union of Medical Marijuana Patients director James Shaw. "On the other hand, the Department of Health and Human Services is planning to grant patent rights with possible worldwide application to develop medicine based on cannabis."

"Though UMMP welcomes any potential new research that could come from KannaLife Sciences' federal endorsement, it is highly disconcerting that the contemplated grant is an exclusive one," the organization posted on its website.

James Shaw, Union of Medical Marijuana Patients: "It makes no sense for the government to provide [the patent], which the government owns, to a single company with exclusive rights"

"It is a grave injustice that patient association in California are now facing a coordinated and comprehensive attack by the DOJ, while one pharmaceutical company in New York stands to profit tremendously from the monopolization of medical cannabis thanks to the HHS," UMMP posted.

i agree ive been saying all along its about money...i mean if you think about it they never want to prevent you from getting diseases really they are happier having you get them and then having you pay them to treat you or buy their medicine...its fuckin sick and yes i agree they should be cleaned out

This is sickening. When I finish my education I'm leaving this country. This is a new level of low for even the US government. They've gone beyond reason and aren't even pretending to care what the people want anymore. And some people still think we're living in a democratic nation.

I always get a kick out of people who say "ahh im going to leave this country I was born in after I do ____blank" Where exactly is it that your going to go? You are not a citizen of any other country and its not so easy just to get citizenship in a decent country... plus what makes you think most of the countries you would be willing to move to are any better then the US gov't? Believe it or not the rest of the world is just as fucked as the USA...

Obviously it's harder than just signing a few papers, but with a college degree for an in-demand field of study I can't imagine it'll be too difficult... It's not like I'll be making minimum wage or living off their version of welfare.

And at the rate it's going, the US is going to be much more fucked than the rest of the world in a few years. It's as much the people I want to get away from as the government itself. As overblown as the perception of Americans being fat, lazy, and selfish may be, there is some truth behind it.

People in the USA need to wake up. Biovail's right, there's not even a pretext of giving people what they demand anymore. It's an attitude of "we're gonna let these business run things and you're gonna deal with it!" and it has to change, or the USA is headed to even darker times.

It's been like this for a while, actually; only now there's global indignation on behalf of the corpus against Homo corporatus, that elusive new species of person now suddenly able to demand constitutional rights. Huge multinationals devastate lands that do not belong to them, exploiting the indigenous people as well - but wait! These corporations can't be evil! Look here, it says on the box that they support the environment/donate to charity/save nuns and babies/whatever. Or maybe $2mil to a random tearjerker charity totally makes up for betting on (and blowing) non-existent money. I have no idea.

Big Pharma, Big Food - it's unbelievable how readily we submit to the control of others. In the words of ol' Ben Franklin (who is spinning so fast in his grave that I swear today was shorter than yesterday): "He who sacrifices freedom for security deserves neither."

Sucks, but when you've smoked it "illegally" for years, news like this hardly comes as a surprise. The State of Washington is running into all sorts of trouble legalising medical marijuana because they can't borrow California's balls long enough to say "piss off, DEA, we're going green."

Every time you think the US government can't possibly get more fucked up, it does. Seriously what is wrong with our country right now? NDAA, SOPA, bans on most of the psychedelic RCs, use of drones in the US, and this!! We really need to drastically reform our government before it completely turns into big brother.

Well as long as they don't have laws preventing me from leaving the country permanently, I'm happy. I only have to stay for another 4 years.

^ I dont understand guys...how exactly is the oppressive government affecting you personally? Compared to the majority of the world America is in damn good shape and unless the government is truly fucking your personal self over so hard that the only way out is to leave the country then why not stay. Seriously moving cities is dramatic enough. Moving to another country is pretty extreme...especially when fresh out of college.

Right now, I'm relatively happy with my freedoms. Compared to many other countries I have more than decent human rights. But our government is corrupt, and has been putting the concerns of corporations before the concerns of citizens for quite some time now. If things continue to advance the way the have over the past few years, our government could turn out to be considerably more oppressive than many other countries. Unless I have tens of millions of dollars, I have no voice in the lawmaking process, or pretty much any political processes.

They destroyed the first amendment earlier this week without so much as a peep out of the media. Freedom of the press just narrowly escaped as of yesterday (SOPA), and who knows how long that will be postponed. It can't be much longer before freedom of speech, no standing army, etc go out the window too. It might not be too bad today, but all the laws restricting our freedoms are just now piling up to be taken advantage of when needed.

How can you not say the government is oppressive? They just took away your right to a goddamn trial a few days ago! People like you are going to be realizing how bad it really is in a few years. Or you will just continue to bury your heads and act like this is the best place to live ever. You know people in north Korea think they live in the best country in the world. Meanwhile they are being sold into slavery and are starving. Jut because it's worse somewhere else doesn't mean you should turn a blind eye to injustice

Incorrect. I don't mean to be rude, but this is precisely why things end up so crap. People are convinced that it doesn't matter what they say - that the corporations and their government lapdogs are closing their mouths for them. It infuriates me that this attitude is coming from America, who - since her conception - has established this image of complete dedication to justice and pride in the fact that it is a "free country."

I hate to say it, but the people who think they have no voice simply are not shouting loud enough.

Back on topic: perhaps if there is enough information on this available to the public (you'd be surprised how many people - and what types of people - are for the decriminalisation and/or legalisation of cannabis in the US), there will be a large enough general outcry (see: Internet Blacklist Bill) to prevent this from happening. But if everyone just sits back and acts all butthurt, then yeah. Things will suck.

^This is why I vote in every single local, state and federal election.

I think I was one of the only potheads that voted to legalize weed in Cali last time around.

I can vote, yes. I can send letters to politicians. I can support activist groups that I agree with. But unless I personally run for office and am elected, what I say can just be ignored. I'm not saying I disagree with you.. Maybe my first statement was over exaggerated. But the idea of a country of equality, where every citizen has an equal ability to influence how that country is governed, is far from a reality.

Money speaks louder than words.
