Detroit— Federal investigators have broken up a PCP distribution ring in southeast Michigan and found more than six gallons of the drug, the largest such seizure by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in Michigan.
Prosecutors charged Eric Mitchell, 41, of Carson, Calif., on Monday for his role in the drug ring. Mitchell, who is free on $150,000 bond, faces 10 years to life in prison if convicted of possession with intent to distribute.
"A seizure of this size puts a significant dent in the availability of a very dangerous drug throughout Metro Detroit," said DEA Special Agent in Charge Robert L. Corso.
PCP, or phencyclidine, causes users to act irrationally or violently and often is used along with marijuana, according to the DEA. The substance is volatile and could ignite, explode or emit dangerous fumes.
Mitchell's arrest started with a tip Friday. A DEA special agent in Louisville, Ky., found a suspicious package at a UPS facility bound for a business in the 19000 block of Livernois in Detroit, according to records filed in U.S. District Court in Detroit.
