I caught an ant under my fingertip
And I held it there
To watch its antennae wave and pivot frantically
Just so it would know
What it was like to be held down, and not be able to move no matter how hard you tried
And then I pressed down on it slowly
First its rear, then its middle
And finally its head
Harder and harder
More and more
Until all I could see were two little front feet
And two weakly swiveling antennæ tips
Harder and harder
Weaker and weaker
And then I let him go
Just so he would know
What it was like to be held down, and to be let free
If that ant had been a human, he would have made a decision right then
Whether he loved me for giving me his life
Or whether he hated me for threatening it
I wish I could make such decisions about people
Because I wonder what I would choose in the end
Sometimes I wish somebody would hold me down and not let me move or breathe
And then let me go
Just so I could know
What it was like to fear death
And to see if I would love life more afterwards
