(FDA) to begin phasing out (Darvocet)

Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to immediately begin phasing out Darvon (Darvocet) products from the market. Public Citizen alleges that the drug has been associated with more than 2,000 accidental deaths, is physically addictive, and is no more effective than safer alternatives.!
"Is no more effective than safer alternatives" :p

Last year, the British government announced a phased withdrawal of the drug as well..!!

The Food the Drug Administration should immediately begin phasing out the use of propoxyphene,” said Dr. Sidney Wolfe, director of Public Citizen’s Health Research Group. “Millions of people, are being put at risk when using this drug when there are safer, more effective Opiates available.
 
Thank fuck it about time. Now if only theyd take darvon off the market in canada stupid doctors wouldnt be able to script it.

It's the only opioid i would not accept for free and that is saying alot.
 
Paranoid Android why would you not take free Darvocet? Its not That bad if you're in pain, shit I actually Like Tramadol A Lot , but sometimes if my body aches I think mixing it up opiates with Darvocet takes away some Head ache pain. I know the shits terrible for your heart valves but so is meth and a lot of other drugs (research chemicals) people are using today. I agree its totally shitty but theres a lot of garbage drugs on the market and though Darvocet is on the list I think theres a few things that should go before that cough seroquel cough.

Fuck I agree, it's total shit. Taking any dose didn't even help a headache or any pain I had(friend had script, I didn't even know it was at all risky taking multiple multiple times). Not helpfull, and is it true that THOUSANDS of people died like OP's post said?
And I'm someone who likes Tramadol, so if this does NOTHING that's saying something.

Now we need to get rid of all the hydro/oxycodone with 500 or 750mg APAP crap in them to stop killing pain patients. None of those should have any APAP. It's cheap, people who want the combo can just go get 5000 500mg tablets at safeway cheaply.
 
i used to nod off propoxyphene. how would people die from it anyway? i know its chemical structure is similar to methadone, and darvocets would last a LONG time for me. i get high off tramadol, too. i used to use 100's of mg's of oxycodone or hydrocodone daily, still get high off tramadol. =)
 
Darvocets could be alright if you take 6 of them at your 8th grade dance, but thats about it.

Also, the FDA has been urged to remove acetominophen from vicodin for some time now, but that would make too much sense I guess.
 
Good. Darvocet is a horrible medication. It does jack shit for pain, even if opiate naïve people. I agree with the guy who said he wouldn't even take free darvocet.

One time I saw this kid smoke a darvocet in a bong. He was an idiot though, I also saw him smoke CCC's on more than one occasion.
 
I don't understand why darvocet is more dangerous then other opiates. Perhaps many of those accidental deaths are when it was combined with other drugs. I don't really care much because Darvocet sucks, but I don't really understand their logic about it being dangerous. Anyone know what their specific concerns are about its dangers?
 
Propoxyphene has killed a hell of alot more people over the years. One reason is that much like meperidine/pethidine is that it has a nasty toxic metabolite called norpropoxyphene. It can cause everything from hallucinations to prolongued QT intervals which is a really dangerous heart condition. Lidiocaine, cocaine and amitriptyline are just a few other drugs that act on the heart much like propoxyphene.

Also for such a weak ass opioid it sure causes alot of respiratory depression. As for why i wouldnt accept them for free my one experience with darvon was when i took maybe 300mg's of darvon-N about 10 years ago. I threw up so hard i busted blood vessels in my face. And why would i take darvon when i can walk into any pharmacy and buy OTC codeine thats going to be much better for pain.
 
My dad was scripted darvocet for a minor cyst removal on his back. I love opiates, and I even told him not to waste the copay on such shitty pills.

Ohhh, the stomach pains they caused me the few times I took em'.
