BRISTOL, Tenn. - The Food and Drug Administration is still reviewing King Pharmaceuticals Inc.'s pain drug candidate Embeda, King said Wednesday.

An FDA ruling on Embeda, a morphine pill that is designed to be abuse-resistant, was due Tuesday. King said it is in discussions with the agency and suggested the review will last through early 2009.

Embeda capsules contain an extended-release dose of morphine and a core of naltrexone, a drug that is used to combat addiction. King said that if the pill is crushed or chewed, rather than swallowed as intended, the naltrexone will be released, canceling out the high of the morphine.

Pain pills are often abused by users who grind them up to snort or inject.

In November, an FDA panel said Embeda might help deter abuse, but indicated it was not a major improvement on older drugs. The panel also said there were potential safety issues with exposing patients to naltrexone.

The drug was developed by Alpharma Inc. King completed its $1.6 billion buyout of Alpharma Tuesday, adding Embeda to its pipeline. The company is also developing an abuse-resistant opioid drug called Remoxy.

Remoxy contains oxycodone in a viscuous form, which is designed to frustrate attempts defeat to its time-release formula by crushing, snorting or dissolving the drug in alcohol.

Oxycodone is marketed by Purdue Pharma as OxyContin.

King Pharmaceuticals shares fell 2 cents to $10.39 in morning trading.

If there really is no alternative ROA to swallowing, then we can always just pop more of em and still be fucked 8) Pills shouldn't be IV'd period so who really gives a shit if you can't IV it. Get some fucking heroin

People will find a way to abuse it, just give it some time..

I think it's a contraction of Revia (naltrexone) and oxycodone.
 
I have not looked at the solubility charts myself but I would have to speculate that since naloxone is thebaine derived there will be some solubility properties to exploit in order to precipitate the morphine out of solution and leaving the naloxone behind. Sine this is a bit more advanced procedure they will be dirt cheap on the illicit market, more morphine for those in the know ;)

Anyone figure this out yet?

I'm no chemist but it seems to me there has to be something out there that can simulate the PH level of gastric acid. Something that can:
1) Simulate the PH level of stomach acid so as to dissolve the outer layer releasing the morphine all the while leaving the core of naltrexone intact so it doesn’t neutralize the morphine. And
2) Be safe to drink. Good tasting would be a plus but I’m sure people would trade that luxury for something that works.

Yes...Hydrochloric Acid is very near stomach acid.
 
hey not to be 'that guy' and state the obvious ruing the party.. lol buuuuuuuut.....


all you will have to do is put it under your tongue and take it out before you get to the high blocking cream filled center

it won't take long to figure out how deep in the pill the blocker is. You could even go around the pill with a knife and scrape off the good stuff...hmm... lol I can see it already, when the first pill is in hand, have a nice experimental party time as you chip away bits and snort them till you figure out you've hit the middle as the high goes away =D YAY SCIENCE!

Wow now that I think about it, what the hell good would this drug be for anything but a one time dose? How could it be used for more? When it came time for the second pill you would have the blocker in your system right?

When will these people learn that junkies will get a degree in moleculear chemistry and learn how to defeat the matrix of these before they say "Oh well, the man beat us, let's all give up drugs and go to church."
