FDA proposes bypassing doctors, selling prescription drugs over the counter...

I love how the supplement/'natural cure' industry always implies that pharmaceutical companies are just out to grab their money, when all they're doing is trying to make sure you spend that money on your fish oil and multivitamin and zinc pills instead.
And at the same time GlaxoSmithKline now have LOVAZA- prescription fish oil. Why? So they can sell it to people who have insurance for much more than the same stuff you can get anywhere. Yeah, big pharma really does run the FDA. (The head commissioner is a former Monsanto executive.) The whole thing is fucked.

Selling prescription drugs of OTC products saves the money of the consumer. Instead of paying 20 bucks for the same amount of active ingredient, the consumer pays 10, or even 0 depending on the insurance company.

Does it though? It's not like it's a gift from the insurance companies. It's just hiding and spreading the cost.

For what it's worth, very few people (relatively) are on Lovaza, though a lot of people who have no use (or are harming themselves) with fish oil are downing tons of the stuff. Eat fish, but leave the supplements alone.

If you are already paying for health insurance that covers medications, yeah you'd save money. I hear about individuals requesting for a ibuprofen script because they save money getting the extra strength pills @ a large quantity. The doc is more than happy to script it because for one they are in pain, and two it saves them a lot of money as the insurance wont pay for the 10 dollar bottle of however many pills if it isn't scripted.

Also doctors aren't stupid and realize that if the medication is going to be cheaper to be bought OTC (instead of paying for a doc appt to get refills, etc) they will tell you to buy them OTC. Or if it will be cheaper to buy it via script, they'll write you a script. I've been scripted senna-s, and I saved money getting a script of it instead of buying it OTC. I buy fish oils and baby asprin OTC because it is really cheap, and I don't need to see the hematologist every now and then for a check up (I have a history of blood clots so I need to take them).
