FDA looks to curb abuse of cough medicine

WASHINGTON — Federal health regulators are weighing restrictions on Robitussin, NyQuil and other cough suppressants to curb cases of abuse that send thousands of people to the hospital each year.
The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday posted its review of dextromethorphan, an ingredient found in more than 100 over-the-counter medications that is sometimes abused for its euphoric effects. The practice, dubbed "robotripping," involves taking more than 25 times the recommended dose of a cold medicine and is mainly associated with teenagers.
At high doses the drug causes increased blood pressure, heart rate and fever. Abusers can also suffer side effects from other ingredients mixed in cough medicines, such as acetaminophen, which can cause liver damage.

maybe they should only allow dxm as an active ingredient in cough suppressants 8)

i guess that could send the wrong message to the public though

I think it is about personal responsibility and if someone cannot read a label then "fuck em"

This. Before long everything will be illegal and we will need to pin a letter of written permission to our shirts to take anything.

To compare the 8,000 hospital visits in 2008 due to dxm containing medicines to aspirin:

■ From 1972-1976, there were 1-2 million cases of accidental (aspirin) poisoning per year in the United States. Since 1976, the number of accidental poisonings has dropped to about 500,000 cases per year.

Popular brands containing dextromethorphan include Wyeth's Dimetapp, Bayer's Alka Seltzer Flu Plus and Procter & Gamble's Vicks cough medicines. The drug is available in pills, gel caps, liquids and other forms.

thank you, NBC, for telling me where to get my next high from 8)

there use to be a brand called dexalone that they sold at longs drugs where the only ingredient was dxm im not sure if they still make it though, but i use to love talking a few of those with a few vicodin or percs

I wouldn't be surprised if it were restricted to RXs or sold in a similar way as ephedrine.

It's just like when heroin was first marketed for cough--there was a lag time between introduction and the realization that it had "abuse issues." DXM recreational use is a fairly new phenomenon.

"A spokeswoman for the Consumer Healthcare Products Association said the group has been working since 2003 to reduce abuse through educational campaigns targeting parents, teenagers and school nurses."

Well that sounds excellent! Why not just keep DXM legal and continue the education?

most of the people ive known who like dxm tend to be retards.
make it behind the counter only.
the fact that so many retards upload videos liek
LULZ WE WERE ON DXM on youtube should tell you something about dxm.

I think availability intertwining with age is the cause of a lot of these videos, lol.

I've been told that most pharmacies carry cough syrup with codeine but it's "under the counter" Meaning if you ask for it, most likely they can give it to you but they won't give you a lot. Anyone else hear of this?

Talking about the FDA banning everything

FDA bans Piracetam

The FDA has recently informed retailers and distributors that Piracetam is being marked as a drug. That it is not legal to sell as a dietary supplement. Smartpowders.com was informed of this on Monday August 30th, 2010. We have been given 15 days to respond to this letter from the FDA.

How can this be true? 8o

^ Alcohol sends nearly a million a year in the UK.

That number sounds about right for young teens finding out about DXM in their health books with no seperation of different types of dxm products. Time to guess if you don't have much awareness and erowid or something along those sorts.

Thankfully I found erowid in middle school years before I did DXM and had no problem besides getting super messed up lol. What's funny is most parents would be pissed at a middle schooler being aware of erowid, but hey, I never really got into street drugs, pharms, or alcohol. Like any other American kid, I became aware of drugs at an early age, but I would certainly say some knowledge helped make me with making slightly less retarded decisions.

I know, but that's irrelevant and shouldn't be blamed on DXM. If they really cared about things like this codeine products wouldn't be so frequently packed with acetaminophen.

lets see
how about you put the fucking shit behind the counter?
its not THE MANUFACTURERS fault that if you take doses more than 10x higher than the FDA allows, you feel "something".
just get all the dumbasses who do DXM to get some real fucking drugs.

see what kind of fucking weirdos do that shit?
who the fuck thinks its cool to make videos of yourself on a bunch of fucking cough medicine.
