New drug worry in Phila.: synthetic marijuana.

Federal agents are cracking down on imports of a synthetic marijuana that has started appearing in the Philadelphia area.

It is not illegal in any state to possess the substance, but Food and Drug Administration regulations bar its import and sale because it is not a tested and approved drug.

Eighty-five parcels arriving from Amsterdam at a UPS facility at Philadelphia International Airport were detained and then seized after tests proved positive for the drug, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The latest seizures were Tuesday after a CBP lab in Georgia confirmed that two parcels discovered Jan. 6 contained JWH-018, a synthetic cannabinoid. The seizures were a first for the agency's Philadelphia region.

The confiscated materials are small, silvery plastic bags of dried leaves labeled with the brand name K2 and marketed as incense that can be smoked. In all, Customs and Border Protection in Philadelphia said, it has seized about four pounds of the potpourri-like stuff.

"It's just random plant material, but they coat it with a chemical and then they dry it out," said Homeland Security spokesman Steve Sapp.

Spice, Gemini and Yucatan Fire are other brands being distributed, Sapp said.

"JWH-018 is a relatively new discovery for us," said Allan Martocci, CPB director of port oversight in Philadelphia. "If it indeed reacts similar to marijuana, then it poses some real concern for law enforcement, and it's good that CBP removed these products from our nation's marketplace."

Although the drug is not federally classified as a narcotic, it is listed as a drug and chemical of concern, illegal for sale without FDA approval, according to CBP. That violation was the basis for the seizure.

With a market value of up to $50 for three grams, the Philadelphia seizures of about 2 kilograms puts the street value of the haul at as much as $30,000, the agency estimated. The parcels weighed from four to 92 grams.

Kansas and Missouri are considering outlawing synthetic marijuana.

and why is that?

LOL! Yeah, if people sell it for MORE than good REAL pot costs, this actually seems like a worth while bust! =p

thats a shame, jwh 018 is a pretty good high, a lot like weed with more focus on your head.

Well it actuallt does sell for more than pot in my area. at the head shop anyway.

wow no shit?.. well yeah I could see that, head shops charge like 60 bux for little things of salvia you can pick up for ten bucks online

This thread title is inaccurate; could someone change it?

The article says that the FDA bars import and sale of K2, not JWH-018.

god fucking dammit the murder rate in this city is so high can't the police just do shit that matters

Hey, does anyone know if JWH-018's sale and import is banned as far as when it's marketed as a smoking blend? I saw the article mentioned K2. Or is the outright sale/import of JWH-018 illegal (when it's sold as plant food etc)???

I understand them banning the sale of JWH blends made to smoke BUT I'm more concerned about the chemical in general being banned.

It kinda sucks but once I tried JWH for myself and felt how high I got I knew it was just a matter of time before it was illegal. Any info is appreciated.

edit: oh Coolio answered my question, thanks bro.

Fuck it, they can ban the smoking blends all they want. People should be smoking the pure stuff instead of all that inert nastiness anyway. I'll continue to occasionally indulge in my plant food then.

No surprises here, they crack down on anything worth using. Its pretty random that this stuff would fetch a higher price than real bud, it must take some desperate people to buy it. Or maybe it is more potent?

A few individuals in my area sell this drug (in pure, powder form) for, I've been told (I don't smoke), far less than the cost of smoking actual weed. I've never actually seen this, just heard rumors, but it seems to be somewhat-popular.

it is very potent about 5x thc. non-tolerant user dose ranges from 2mgs to 5mgs. It has some cross tolerance with THC but not fully (proof of functional selectivity)

^ I know the pure shit is but this is talking about plant preparations, people said they were more expensive than weed. My enquiry related to if you would get more out of the plant matter per weight than your average weed but I suppose it would probably vary from product to product.

So....Is there a risk of importing JWH-18 to 73 to your home? Do you think that doing so would bring unwanted attention?

In my opinion, white powders look even more suspicious than herbs that might be laced. They would probably think its something worse.

Regardless of what they think, it would still be legal to have JWH-018 in transit. The FDA is only admitting the power to regulate the smoking blends.
