Favourite Mathematical Functions & Equations

The Riemann Hypothesis is one of the most frustrating math problems in history. It has been open for almost 150 years and has evaded attempts by the best mathematicians in solving it.

It concerns the distribution of prime numbers via zeros of the Riemann Zeta Function, which is an ugly function to say the least.

There have been numerous attempted proofs which have inevitably failed, and several books and articles expressly written to show how not to solve the Riemann Hypothesis.

I love math, but I have no desire to even work in number theory because of that damn conjecture.

As for my favorite function, I would have to say the normal distribution. Thanks to the central limit theorem, we know it pretty much explains every random phenomena there is.

Logarithms.. logs are sick. The change of base formula is really useful. But mainly because they're called logs. Which reminds me of trees.

Log to the base a (z) = b (or written Log a (z) = b)

Just another way of writing a^b = z

Change of base? For example if you have log3 (7) and you want to work it out on your calculator, how can you? There's only Log (which is log to the base 10) or log to the base e (called ln) . So how can you work out a log with a base 3?

You take the log of both numbers and divide the one in brackets by the base.

So to work out log 3 (7)

= ln7 / ln3

will give you your answer on your calculator

Or same thing

= Log10 (7) / Log10 (3)


Get it....?

so 3^x = 7 = (10^x =7/10^x=3) ?

log3 (7) = x

calculated as

log10 (7) / log10 (3) = x

What you've written is (log10 (7) = x) / (log10 (3) = x)

Which is superfluous to our needs in terms of finding x.
