I really like Jordaan Mason [Now known as Jordaan Mason and the Horse Museum] for when I'm feeling sad. It's really good emotional folk punk, you can probably find it anywhere online for free [dunno Bluelight's stance on piracy but I'm pretty sure he put most of his stuff out for free] and I like to get high and listen through the albums. Wipes all my sads away

'No kids' is my fav sad music, but I dont know about you guys but I tend to find an album when Im sad, fall in love with it, kill it and plead it dry off all its energy and put it deep down iside me.....and then it becomes my new happy music :] ?

Townes Van Zandt wrote the saddest music I've ever heard, and his songs were great. Johnny Hobo wrote (hopefully he'll make more once he's out of rehab) pretty sad folk punk songs, but sad in a much different way than Townes. If you haven't heard Townes Van Zandt though, have a listen. He did some kinda normal country songs (in terms of sound), which I don't like nearly as much as his folk music. Serious poetry. I've always found it interesting how sad music can really lift my spirits sometimes.

to the OP: Is this music that makes you sad, or music in which the performer is expressing his/her/collective sadness?

"I miss the comfort in being sad".

I would go for something by Cat Power, probably Moon Pix. And then Chelsea Girl by Nico. Those albums make me wanna retreat inside my own sadness.

Sometimes, but not always. For instance, I'm listening to The Best of Times by Sage Francis right now, which is a really uplifting song, but the story it tells and the way the music constantly builds and breaks makes me feel sad and happy all at once and shit like that. And of course some songs remind me of past events or people either due to subject matter or where I was or who I was with when I heard it.

I assume the OP is asking what we listen to whilst we are sad. In that case:

I. Lento , Sostenuto tranquillo ma cantabile - Henryk Gorecki

Gymnopdies - Erik Satie (although I listen to this when I am not feeling sad also)

And their Refinement of the Decline (album) - Stars of the Lid

Some Velvet Underground ie, Pale Blue Eyes, Candy Says, etc.

That xx album depresses the hell out of me. Probably because it is so boring. So wouldn't really call that my favorite. But hearing their voices makes me feel so dull
