Favorite David Lynch movie?

Sn2-

what about The Straight Story? completely linear and straightforward. beautiful. badalamenti's score doesn't hurt either.

also, i said it earlier, but anyone who likes (or doesn't like) lynch should rent 'lumiere and company' if you don't have immense respect for his abilities after watching that you have no business watching movies.

I was just scanning through this thread to see if anyone had mentioned The Straight Story yet, and it got its first mention half an hour ago - LOL!

Straight Story is brilliant - it's probably on my all time top 10 list. As for other Lynch stuff, I'd have to go and watch them again. Most of his movies I saw ages ago when I was younger and going through my "weird movies are cool but I don't quite know why" phase. I'm sure I'll still like them (probably love them), but I'd prefer to see them again first. :)

My favourite is Mulholland Drive, although I still haven't seen Blue Velvet, or Eraserhead, or the rest of Twin Peaks (seen Season 1 only... ).

Lost Highway was 'great', disturbing as fuck, dark and horrific and intense. I don't know if I 'liked it'... although it certainly left an impression on me!!

Mulholland Drive is absolutely fantastic though, I really love that film. The two female leads are excellent, the story is gripping and intriguing, although I tend to watch it in a state of detatchment, which allows for less mis-understanding (although maybe not more understanding... lol) The way I see it, it's about the Hollywood Dream, first half of the movie (before 'the box') is the 'dream', the way we'd all like it to be, and the second half is more the way it is, back-stabbing, depressing, envious, etc...

I would say that I don't feel bad not understanding what Lynch is on about, his movies are as much about just enjoying the production and the situations as they are about understanding the whole thing. He has a new film coming out soon, 'Inland Empire'. Can't wait! :)

However, I think one of the reasons which people point out as a weakness, being cheesy, is completely invalid. That's a part of sci-fi filmmaking which is not at the fault of Lynch.

Mmmmk. David Lynch directed Dune. It's the directors job to bring his vision for the film in to fruition. If the movie turns out 'cheesy' or 'bad', it's as a result of either poor vision or poor execution on the part of the director. Just because it's a sci-fi movie, doesn't mean that it has to be cheesy. Hell, even if it was a low budget sci-fi movie (which it wasn't, Dune had a huge budget for the time) there's still no excuse for it turning out cheesy. Film is 100% a director's medium, and if the film turns out poorly--it's the director's fault.

Am I trying to say that Lynch is a bad director? NO! I love David Lynch's work; but in the case of Dune--and he has admitted to this several times himself--he royally fucked up.

Man, if you have to pin me down to my favorite DL film, I guess it's Mulhollnd Drive. But if I could pick 2, my next favorite would be Twin Peaks: Fir Walk With Me.
