Let me also plug Louis Sachar's Sideways Stories from Wayside School and Wayside School is Falling Down, which none have mentioned yet.

The surreal comedy of these books--they're books that literally read as strangely as the back matter says--kept me entertained on many an evening. Even today, when I lose a sock I sometimes get the idle thought that it might be in the fridge.

OOOOMG I totally forgot about these books!! Those are such great reads. I've actually tried to remember the title a few times and never could recall it. I'm so glad you posted these!

I read a book called I am David about aboy who travels through europe after excaping a concentration camp. I can not remeber who wrote it, but I know I enjoyed the book, found some of it sad and some of it disturbing.
Another one I thought was great I think it was done in primary was one called walkabout, its a bout a couple of children whos plane crashed in the australian outback and an aboriginal boy helps them. that stands out because it was so emotional in the end, after everything this boy done to help them and they were basically scared because of the colour of his skin.
the obvious ones such as the BFG, James and the giant Peach, the witches, the kelpies pearls etc are ones you done in school.
I loved reading then as much as I do now. big happy face, think I might go to bed with another book thinking about it.

A couple of books come to mind...Cujo by Stephen King in third grade and Hollywood Wives by Jackie Collins in 4th grade.
I was too afraid to look at the Cujo cover so I kept it face down. I had no idea was a blow job was in the Collins novel.
