Fasting Megathread

What would be good ideas for the day before the fast...ie what would be a good general breakfast, lunch and dinner meal idea?
Ive heard eating a more fat based last meal is better too...any word on this?
 
^A fat based last meal would be good if you were trying to survive a lengthy period of time in the arctic :). When it comes to actually choosing to fast, then there is no reason to try and last as long as possible (which is the only reason to binge before starting). Stretching out your stomach will make initial hunger much worse and filling up your gut with food before stopping altogether will make things more difficult downstairs. What you really want to do is ease yourself in.

A good first time 7 day long fast would be:
-1 day of raw fruit/vegetables
-1 day of juices
-3 days of water
-1 day of juices
-1 day of raw foods

In order to succeed there must be a goal for you to reach. Endless fasts don't have that and too aggressive ones are more prone to failure. Furthermore failure when you are planning on drinking water for 2 weeks or something usually results in a couple cheesburgers as "it is all over". If you fail by requiring an extra juice day instead of water (raw, juice, water, juice, water, juice, raw) then that's still a win in my books.
 
Day number one of a fast for me.

While I know day one technically isn't over yet, it basically is as I'll be going to bed wicked early tonight. :P Did a lot of biking yesterday (20 miles) and didn't get a lot of sleep last night (less than 6 hours). But yeah, aside from feeling wicked tired, the fast has went well! Started feeling like crap around 1 o'clock but instantly felt better when I got out of the air conditioning and into the 80° heat. :)
 
Unfortunately I had to stop the fast after about 36 hours. Yesterday I mentioned starting to feel like crap around 1 o'clock while at work... Well, today, it started around 8:30 and got progressively worse--The worst feelings I've experienced while fasting. Every time I stood up, no matter how slowly, I felt like I was going to fall over. Walking in a straight line wasn't going too well either... Nausea, diarrhea (thankfully I didn't have much in my system), felt like I was going to puke, felt hot then cold then hot then cold, ...Ate some crappy work food around 12:30 and felt much better.

Guess I just can't fast while in such a climate controlled environment. I know I had issues fasting over the Winter, too, so maybe it's the cold (it's kept at about 60° in there by my and others' guestimations). Who knows. Here's hopin' I get a three-day weekend again soon so I can fast then, 'cause I still want to do a longer fast...

...Do you guys think I should've stuck it out, that the feelings would've subsided? I mean, it wasn't like I was sitting there in a T-shirt--I had on a mock-turtleneck at one point and was still absolutely freezing. :-/
 
are you drinking enough water? Drinking vegetable juices is a great way to give you nutrients,minerals etc but doesnt require your digestive system to work...which is a big help....supplementing the liver and taking something to ensure a bowel movement is also quite important ive learned.
 
I drink 2-300 ounces of water daily.

I'm not interested in doing a juice fast, but thanks!

Nor am I interested in supplements while fasting. My bowels work just fine even during the fast--After day three, I know I'm completely clear. ;)
 
I'll be sure to check him out, though I've already fasted easily half a dozen times over the past six months--This time was the only time I had issues. Well, and the very first time.
 
Try eating healthier food for a while before your next fast. If you eat a lot of junk food you will feel horrible as your system tries to clean itself up.

Also the cycling the day before could have been a different variable? I haven't lurked you hard enough to know if that is a solid ride for you or not ;)
 
^ I didn't even think about the impact the cycling may have had, though that was the day before I started the fast, and I felt majorly ill on the second day... Though it could also be what abracadabra_ mentioned, 'cause normally I eat pretty well, but the day before the fast I had french fries, banana bread (albeit vegan and organic :P), and peach schnapps (though not a lot 8)).

Yeah... I think all of these factors, combined with me not liking the air conditioning to begin with and just ending my period, must've been what made me feel like absolute shit.

(And for the record, ama, 20 miles is a bit more than what I normally do almost every day--Typically bike to and from work which is 14 miles total.)
 
Starting a juice fast tomorrow. I think Ill only go for 2 days at this stage which won't really give me a whole lot of benefits, but I ate fairly bad last week (lots of pizza and beer due to holiday)...so im looking to give my digestive system a well earned rest.

Will be enjoying some black bean + veggie burrito's tonight and then will be waking up to a nice big serving of spirulina.

Does anyone here use anything specifically to move the bowels? At this stage I think ill just be using psyllium husk. Also going to be supplementing the liver with milk thistle +dandelion extracts.
 
Fasting is an amazing way to detoxify your body and make such disease like cancer stop right in it's tracks or help to prevent it.

Not many know this but meat and dairy are carcinogenic. Especially the red meat which has sodium nitrite added as a preservative to make it "nice and red".

Dairy milk has casein in it which is a carcinogen. All the natural doctors who recommend a natural fast of organic juices and plant based diets advise to stay away from processed dairy products.
When you add dairy milk to normal tea, it negates all the health benefits of catechins (antioxidants) within the tea.
The dairy industry is quiet big though so they advise us to consume three servings of dairy a day for healthy bones and teeth, how come we have so much osteoporosis and dental problems? What they also don't mention is that pasteurized dairy milk looses critical enzymes which aid in absorbing calcium.

Soy milk is not a better alternative either, soy (especially for males) is terrible as it influences the estrogen in he body.

I stick to organic rice, oat and almond milk.

Do you have sources to back up your claims, B17? I have never heard they put sodium nitrite in red meat or that casein is carcinogenic.

Nitrites, is what keeps the meat that rich red colour, if they did not add it, it would look dull grey and not many people would want to purchase the off-coloured meat.

If you are going to eat meat, eat more poultry (chicken and turkey) or fish.
If you want nitrite free red meat, choose organic.

Sodium nitrite helps preserve cured meats, such as bacon and sausage, by inhibiting the growth of Clostridium botulinum, the microbe that produces the botulism toxin. Sodium nitrite by itself is not a carcinogen, but it commonly combines with amines in protein-rich foods to form the cancer-inducing agent nitrosamine. Strict regulation of nitrosamine levels in cured meats, as well as the required addition of antioxidants, helps mitigate the carcinogenic effect of sodium nitrite in these foods, states Dr. Richard Scanlan of Oregon State University's Linus Pauling Institute. However, minimize your exposure to dangerous nitrosamines by limiting your intake of foods containing sodium nitrite. When you choose to consume cured meats, eat them with foods containing the antioxidants vitamin C or vitamin E to help reduce the formation of nitrosamines in your body.

You can still eat meat with Sodium Nitrites, just limit your intake. They actually recommend eating at most 500 grams of red meat per week or less.

Effect of milk on tea

A study[78] at the Charité Hospital of the Berlin Universities showed that adding milk to tea will block the normal, healthful effects that tea has in protecting against cardiovascular disease. This occurs because casein from the milk binds to the molecules in tea that cause the arteries to relax, especially EGCG. You see, adding dairy milk to tea, cocoa and even blueberries, makes the antioxidant useless within these foods. Casein protein is the main reason behind it.

That's some interesting stuff though--I wonder if that's the same science behind milk negating the health effects of chocolate, 'cause I've always heard that.

And for the record, I don't eat meat--I just had no idea they used nitrates in "fresh" meat. :P

I too drink organic rice milk, however, i believe that your comment about soy may be misinformed.
Whole soybeans contain phyto-estrogens, particularly lignans. Lignans block oestrogen receptors within the body which prevents the toxic effects of excess oestrogens...
 
^ In other words, eating soybeans every so often stops you from becoming a female? :P

I know of so many males who have (although they are of a healthy weight) somewhat flabby (perhaps "fatty" is a better word) chests, almost making them appear to have A-cup breasts. Perhaps this has something to do with it?
 
I listened to a magnificent recording on the subject recently, Ill relisten and get back to you, but I recall something about the environment we live in contains many harmful oestrogens (plastics etc)...and so eating whole soy can help to guard against this..it did also mention the men with flabby breasts!!

On a more relevant note: halfway through day 1 of my juice fast, so far ive had a big glass of spirulina/chlorella mix for breakfast, and a carrot,celery,beet,ginger,garlic,tumeric juice for lunch!
