Fasting Megathread

^ What she said.

Moreover, most people don't use fasting as a way to quickly lose weight. It's meant more to help clean your system of toxins. Whether or not the break down of those toxins helps you gain or lose weight after fasting is not an answered question. I guess it might work differently depending on, again, how your diet is *most of the time*.

hmm okay.

thanks guys;)

Periodic fasting increases fat burning and reduces the risk of disease....

Fasting has been a popular practice among health conscious individuals for centuries. In general, doctors have discouraged the practice of fasting deeming it a dangerous fad among ignorant health seekers. Recent research has proven that regular fasting is not merely a fad, but a health promoting practice. Research conducted at Intermountain Medical Center's Heart Institute identified several health benefits offered through periodic fasting.

Dr. Benjamin Horne stated that 'fasting is not just an indicator for a healthy lifestyle, it is actually the fasting that reduces the risk of disease.' During fasting, the body utilizes fat as a source of fuel instead of glucose. This results in a decrease in fat cells within the body reducing the risks for high cholesterol, insulin resistance, and diabetes according to Dr. Horne. The benefits in the study were seen by merely skipping at least two meals on a regular basis.

Researchers conducted the study on over 200 individuals consisting of patients from the medical center and healthy volunteers. One group eliminated both food and drink for 24 hours while the other group performed a water-only fast. Participants were monitored for the duration of the study to evaluate cardiac risk factors, markers of metabolic risk, and general health assessments. Fasting improved blood glucose levels, reduced body fat, and lowered triglycerides after the fast was completed. Many of the participants were regular fasters, so researchers set out to isolate the benefits of fasting with a follow-up study.

Researchers conducted a second study to ensure the results were not merely the result of a healthier lifestyle among fasters. They selected a group of individuals who did not engage in regular fasting. The participants were evaluated for general health markers and then put on a 24 hour water fast. X-ray scans revealed narrowing of the arteries in around 75 percent of those who didn't fast. In contrast, clogged arteries only affected 63 percent of those in the earlier study who engaged in regular fasting. Researchers began to uncover the health benefits of regular fasting.

Planned, periodic fasting increases human growth hormone that regulates glucose and insulin in the body. Human growth hormone increases the metabolism and burning of fat stores. The increased HGH levels seen during fasting can reduce insulin resistance and diabetes risk. In the study, regular periodic fasting reduced the risk of diabetes in half.

Fasting is great imo nothing dangerous about it as a lot of people assume... Fasting is Nature's way of making us healthy by utilizing stored fats and toxins in our blood and tissue.... Even in Ancient Yoga texts on Health it is said" Fasting is the Best Medicine" think about it. and it is mentioned in Bible more than 20+ times.....

Anyone else Fast, have you noticed the benefits of doing so?

^ Merged with The Fasting Thread. :)

I actually started a fast today. I noticed quite a few benefits, one being that my issues with Raynaud's got a lot better. It was very temporary as I still have Raynaud's, but it was significantly better the week or so after fasting. During the fast, it was bad, lol. It's bad right now, too, to be honest.

Found a flaw in either my learning or this article: The number of fat cells you have remains consistent even with fat loss--What you lose is the size of the cell. Yes, you gain fat cells (and fat cell size) when you gain weight, but you do not lose fat cells, only the size, when you lose weight.

Minor flaw in an interesting article/study. :P

On a more personal note, Day 2 of my fast went halfway decent: Felt very cold and quite lazy most of the day. Feeling somewhat better now but still quite cold. :-/

^^ does that matter? I'm guessing it makes it easier to put the weight back on or something but if you are just carrying around more 'empty' fat cells are you at a disadvantage to someone who has never gained alot of weight?

sorry if that didnt make sense...

anyway... I have never done a fast before - but I am excited to try it! I have never felt real hunger before so I think it will be an interesting experience to say the least...

It does matter. Say you have eight fat cells the size of a zero. Here are your eight fat cells: 00000000. You lose weight and suddenly those eight cells shrink to oooooooo. Say you get those eight even smaller, to ........ . There's still eight. But they're small, right? Well, say you only had four to begin with: 0000 to oooo to .... .

Quite a difference when that's on your body instead of on a computer screen!

Gotcha - I guess you can hoover them up at the lipo place tho?

Hah, yes, but that's the thing: Say you get lipo allllll over your body. You don't have any original fat cells left. If you ever start gaining weight, you're going to gain it wherever the lipo suction missed. An acquaintance of my mom had lipo does alllll over her body... When she gained weight a couple years later, she noticeably gained weight near her eyelids. She also gained it on her palms and wrists, and other obscure places.

yes thats sounds just... 8o

prolly great if you are the surgeon tho cus no offence but if you let urselkf get into that state and don't bother with diet and exercise you are prolly just gunna take the easy way out next time round.

anyway, I have just finished stuffing my face about 3 hours ago and I am gunna see what happens when I don't eat for, well, until I get bored. Prolly a couple of days. I don't really get hungry so I am thinking this is not gunna be particularly difficult for me... I know its not a competition lol I am just curious as to whether I will be starving hungry or not by the end...

Good luck on your fast, wooger! Keep us updated. Simply_Live, glad to hear your fast is going well. :)

I ended my fast just shy of the three day mark. Raynaud's was kicking my ass and I got a proverbial slap in the face, so I was rather upset... I know that it's not a good thing to eat when you're upset, but yeah... :-/

It's funny. I feel very tired today, even after getting about eight and a half hours of sleep. It might be lethargy settling in for the completion of day two of fasting, but my head also feels foggy and bogged down. It's almost like stone-over effect.

AP, sorry to hear your fast ended on a negative note. Just keep looking to how you're feeling now and you should be okay. :)

Wooger, I think you're in for a surprise. It's much more difficult to control the urges than what meets the eye! Let us know how it's going for you, though. :)

Good luck on your fast, wooger! Keep us updated.

Thank you! I ended up lasting for about 50 hours over alll, It actually gave me a great sense of achievement afterwards :) it came to an end tho cus I caved at the temptation of some japanese food!

Wow--Over two days on your first fast? How'd you feel during it?

I lasted barely 24 hours on my first one--Got so. cold. that I caved. 8)

uh huh! and it was okay - I didn't think I would be able to do it tho, nighttimes were the worst cus I would just be like 'mmmmmmm food' and I couldn't take my mind off it.

also, I didn't feel bad for eating like a main and two side dishes at wagamamas afterwards :D

i like your analogy!!=D but im confused as to if fasting increases or decreases the fat cell size? and dont the cells just get bigger after you stop fasting? (the weight gain associated with starving yourself aka fasting.

and do you guys take your daily vitamin supplements when you do it? i feel like that'd be beneficial since theres gonna be so many toxins being released. or is that the point of fasting?

Hmm. I found this fasting a bit similar to the diet I used when preparing for a mma fights. I used to call it a prehistorical diet. I ate berries and leafs on the first two days. Then prepared a fish meal on the third one and then continued on berries and leafs. Two days before the match I used to eat huge protein dosage in form of nearly raw steak with as less fat as you could have. Then the day before match a lot of glucose in form of boiled potatoes and vegetables. On the match day fiber rich rye bread with hint of salt and more boiled potatoes. Worked as a charm. Felt energetic and the extra fluid were gone and I had much sugar to use in a match. My record is 17 wins 6 by knockouts and seven with submission and three losses.

so, i had this brilliant idea to put myself and boyfriend on a juice fast for three days. i'm on the morning of day 2 right now, but i don't know if i can finish it. i am so sickened by the juices. i know it's all psychological, but despite the incredibly healthy things in the juices, despite that it's mostly sweet tasting (thanks to apples and pineapple) and despite that it's filled with fruits and veggies i like whole, i absolutely dread each time i have to take a drink. there's something about drinking a liquefied meal with tiny chunks of avocado that literally has me on the verge vomiting.

i feel like a child throwing a fit over broccoli. anyone have any tips on how to get beyond this?

"Drinking a liquified meal with tiny chunks of avocado" would have me on the verge of vomiting too. My only suggestion would be to stop the juice fast and start a water-only fast. But I've never done a juice fast. :P
