I used to have a copy of 'Operation Julie' but I gave it to Drone342 as a present! I'm trying to make a list of images of (in)famous drugs chemists. I don't mean someone who got caught with a frying pan/RB flask type meth setup.

For starters:

I didn't say shilgin because i thought he wanted ppl who illegally made drugs.

I've always really liked Dr. Nichols work. I've found him very approachable, if I've had a problem covered in one of his papers, I just send him an email and I always get a very well thougth out and (almost always) entirely accurate answer. I'm sure Dr. Shulgin would be the same way, but his email address (I assume one exists) isn't as available without an institutional job.
 
Cool, i was thinking to ask how they find out where the bromine has gone after brominating all those bicyclic phens. It always seems to be selective for para to the amino group. The only way i can think to tell where its gone is HMBC (long range proton-carbon NMR).

But then i was also gonna ask why he didn't make any 2-tetrahydronaphthylamines as lsd hybrids then realised he did, about 10 years ago, so im glad i didnt!
 
Anyone got images of Michael Hovey (TheDupont dhemistry who went into fentanyl) and George Marquardt`(he who brought 3-MF to the streets of the US). Even more priceless would be an image of Barry Kidston (the sloppy chemist who made MPTP).
I will hopefully be getting some more images soon, but any additions would be greatly appreciated.

3-mf? not familiar with it.

Was MPTP actually an accident, or a designer opioid metabolized into something he never predicted?

Should be careful about letting the DEA know who us sorts admire. I can see it now,

"Psychedelic Researchers, Nichols, Shulgin Arrested in Kiddie Porn Ring- More news at Nine"
 
MPTP was an accidint. The guy was trying to make MPPP (the reversed ester if demerol) but of you did the condenstaion with the propanoic anhydride too fast, it dehydrated, making MPTP. Strangly, bemidones (MPPP with a 3 alkyl group for added power) don't form a toxic byproducts...

If there was one person in the world I'd like to meet right now it'd definitely be Shulgin. (and his wife)
 
By 'bemidone', since u mentioned the 3-alkyl, im assuming u mean prodine and not ketobemidone which would make bemidone like meperidine but with an added meta-hydroxy group.

Im weary of any 4,4-disubstituted aromatic hydroxy piperidine regardless of the specific nature of the functional group present including on the nitrogen. I'm even more uneasy about compounds that have been deliberately dehydrated although this is not referring to opioids. In that case I think they should be hydrogenated and not left unsaturated.
 
his total synthesis of lysergic acid may be more impressive to the scoundrels here :) hopefully those who get it will forgive the difficulty in reading it ;)
 
You dont understand, his vitamin B12 synthesis revolutionized the way we think about chemistry.

Where do you think the woodward hofmann rules came from?

I've searched high and low for more information regarding that incident, mainly more pictures of the silo. If anyone has any of those a PM would be appreciated. Maybe a famous lab pictures thread. ;)
