hey guys, i regularly use cimetidine(tagamet) to accompany my opiates. does famotidine have any enzyme blocking effects? i think its generic pepcid. i have tried ranitidine(Zantac) mixed with the cimetidine it seems to help, but what about some famotidine with the cimetidine?

famotidine potentiates opioids because it increases oral absorbtion (by raising pH), I don't know about it's enzyme blocking properties, never heard of any.

Famotidine is something I used extensively throughout my studies, I've downed 1,000s of pills so I know the pill well. Very useful when you can't eat.

it depends which opioids and how they're metabolized. if they are through cyp enzymes then yes, as seen in this clinical study it is a potent inhibitor. i'm not sure about mixing different ppi's to attain further benefit. i think you're just better off sticking to one.

I think that study says it is not a very potent inhibitor. Famotidine is not traditionally thought of to have much cyp450 inhibition. It is also an H2 antagonist, not a ppi.

you're right on both counts. my mind was elsewhere especially while reading that study. more research shows that famotidine has no interactions with drugs that are inhibited through cyp enzymes. taking will probably do very little to add to your buzz. i would recommend you stick to cimetidine.
