Family of pregnant mom who died of heroin overdose sues Ohio ex-doctor, hospital, Craigslist

An Ohio ex-doctor was responsible for the death of an expectant mother who died after answering a Craigslist ad for housecleaning services, according to a $40 million lawsuit that also targets the physician’s employer and Craigslist.

The lawsuit filed Monday in county court north of Columbus blames former physician Ali Salim for the death of Deanna Ballman last summer.

Craigslist should have known Salim was dangerous because other women who responded to ads Salim placed had experienced problems that were reported to police and Craigslist, according to the lawsuit.

“Craigslist was on notice and knew or should have known defendant Ali Salim was inherently dangerous to its Internet users,” said the lawsuit, filed on behalf of the woman’s family.

It also says Salim’s employer, Knox Community Hospital, was negligent for allowing him to take syringes that the lawsuit says were used to inject Ballman with heroin. Messages seeking comment were left Tuesday for the hospital and Craigslist.

The lawsuit also alleges someone helped Salim inject the 23-year-old woman with heroin, something investigators say they’ve tried unsuccessfully to prove.

Nine months pregnant, Ballman was alive on July 31, 2012, when Salim placed her in the back of her car and drove her to a rural road in Delaware County where she was found dead the next day, according to the lawsuit.

Investigators, including the Delaware County coroner, have previously declined to say when Ballman died.

Salim has pleaded not guilty to kidnapping, raping and killing Ballman by injecting her with heroin, as well as killing her unborn daughter, to be named Mabel Lilly. His criminal trial, originally scheduled for September, has been moved to Oct. 29.

Salim’s attorney, Sam Shamansky, has said Ballman was prostituting herself to feed a drug habit. A message was left with Shamansky on Tuesday.

Authorities say there’s no evidence she was a drug user, but they have said Ballman was responding to a personal ad, not a housecleaning ad.

Women who previously answered ads placed by Salim reported being accosted, sexually assaulted or asked to be alone in the house while he painted the human digestive system on their abdomens.

Well, the family claims she was answering a housekeeping ad but the investigators said she was answering a "personal" ad. Some woman can work all the way to the end of their pregnancy but it would be a little odd to go find a new job, especially something as physical as housekeeping at 9 months.

Sounds like she was possibly she was previously using and family is looking for someone to place the blame on.

Wierd but wtf is 9 month pregnant women doing answering house cleaning ads?

I know for real, I was thinking the exact same thing. From reading the article and the details held within I can almost gurantee you that this woman was an irresponsible human being. I say this b/c she was obviously using IV diacetylmorphine (aka Heroin) while pregnant (and 9months at that!!). I am sorry but she obviously knew that the "House cleaning" ad on craigslist is 99.9% of the time a solicitation for some kind of sex act or other 'weird request.' I seem to believe the doctor but by no means is he innocent in this if it really happened the way they said it did. She probably went over there several times and got paid to do whatever the hell the doctor wanted her to do and then would probably bring her own heroin and do it while she was at his house and then accidentally OD'd.. thats just what I am guessing and its probably around the truth.

This link to this article has lots more on it all and a heap of pics and some comments -

Ballman died of a heroin overdose but also had morphine and codine in her blood at the time of her death and her urine contained morphine, monoacetylmorphine, codeine, acetylocodine and diacetylmorphine.

Not sure if this is true, but this comment says -

Well if he is found guilty expect him to be executed in Ohio. He killed two. Adios.

That is a lot of speculation..not so sure I would agree. I'm sure she was maybe not an innocent party but I think you might be interjecting a lot of assumptions based on that first article.

I'm not saying you are right or wrong, just saying that is a lot of specific details to assume.

So was he injecting the woman and other women with heroin against their will or were they going there with the intention to shoot up? Or they went to clean the house and then it was a heroin surprise?

This article was confusing. Why is the hospital being sued?

Why is the hospital being sued?

I think from memory reading a bit about it 20 mins ago there was something about he took the needles from there. I might be wrong, I've been reading and posting several articles since.

Yes, it says that the hospital is responsible because they "allowed" him to take the needles home. That is kind of grasping at straws. In the hospital, needles and syringes aren't usually under lock and key and healthcare providers have free access to them as they need them (at least everywhere I ever worked it was this way). When I had patients that had IVs or might require regular meds by injection I frequently stuck several in my pockets for the shift (along with gloves, pens, alcohol swabs, anything else I might need handy). I can't see how the hospital can be responsible if he took a few home with him. Syringes and needles are used so frequently I can't imagine having a system where every single one of them are kept track of.

*edit* as far as the question about the heroin, I think that remains to be seen. His attorney implies they were addicts. The family makes it sound as if he injected them against their will. It could be anywhere in between I think. Maybe he provided them with heroin in return for whatever services they were going there to provide. I think that is questionable also. The family says she was going for a housekeeping job. Police say it was something a little more dark than that.
