SPRING VALLEY — The day after a Rockland family said they were terrorized by heavily armed police who burst into their home looking for someone who didn't live there, the federal agency that organized the drug raid apologized for the incident.

. . .

At 5:30 a.m. Thursday, the family said police officers — their weapons drawn — barged into the house and pointed guns at the family.

. . .

The officers were screaming for someone named Michael, McKay said. When he tried to explain that no one named Michael lived at the house, McKay said the police pulled him outside his home in his underwear in the freezing cold.

McKay said officers yanked his eighth-grade daughter out of her bed at gunpoint. The girl later vomited, fainted and had an asthma attack.

. . .

Botched police raids at the wrong address are on the rise nationwide as law enforcement agencies become more aggressive in their pursuit of drug suspects, said a policy expert who has studied the phenomenon.

"The 30-year-long war on drugs uses war rhetoric, outfits police in war gear and gives them military weapons and instills in police officers a war mentality," said Radley Balko, who wrote a report, "Overkill: The Rise of Paramilitary Police Raids in America" in 2006 when he was an analyst at the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank.

"Now the police have an increasing willingness to take the metaphor literally."

His study found that reports of so-called "wrong-door" raids in which police — often heavily armed — enter the wrong home have increased dramatically over the past 20 years.

Similar incidents have occurred in other places in the Lower Hudson Valley.

Ivamae Green of Mount Vernon sued the city a year ago after she said police officers mistakenly raided her home and performed invasive body searches. The status of the case is unclear.

Yonkers settled a lawsuit with a building superintendent whose apartment was the scene of a police raid in 2007. Two police officers fired 15 shotgun rounds and killed three pit bulls in the small apartment where the 49-year-old man and his children were sleeping. Details of the settlement were unclear.

Another Yonkers family this week was awarded a $20,000 settlement from the city after a woman sued, claiming that police burst into her apartment in 2007 with weapons drawn in search of drugs.

The lawsuit, filed on behalf of Lucreshia Amory, her two children and a friend, accused the police of trespass, assault, false arrest, intimidation, extortion and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

. . .

Balko said more people are beginning to look critically at such raids.

"Maybe the public is finally getting fed up with these tactics and the use of SWAT teams for pot smokers and poker games," he said. "The problem is that it's going to continue because no politician wants to look soft on crime."

the old just need to die off

I wish some of these false raids would end up with $1 million lawsuits several times over & maybe that would make these clowns think twice.

I wish one of these wrong door raids would lead them through the door of some maniac security nuts house with booby traps on at the front door a gun under the pillow and grenades on the bed stand. Blow the fuckin shit out of a swat team somehow just protecting their own home. Get everyone thinking a little bit more about where they go knocking and over what.

These pussy faggots on the DEA show on Spike always say things before EVERY raid like 'we're risking our lives, were doing 'gods work'", like every time they go in they are at risk of getting shot because dealers have guns. Dealers keep guns to protect their drugs and themselves from other druggies, not to go toe to toe with cops. They all in some part of their brain know the cops could come through the door at any time and I'd say they are a million times more likely to turn their guns on themselves than actually shoot at officers. Non-drug dealing homeowners don't have that 'they could come at any time' mentality- they don't think they will ever have to hold back 'when the shit goes down'. To them, an intruder is an intruder, they aren't expecting to ever have to NOT shoot storm troopers running through their homes terrorizing their families and putting them at risk.

The pigs are gonna kick down the wrooong gun nuts door one day, (please god let him stock explosives, pleeeaaase that would make it so much more even). The guy would no doubt die. But could you charge him (beyond the legality of the weaponry haha). You'd have a dead innocent civilian with a pissed off family waiting to sue, national headlines..and oh yeah, some dead scum fuck cops in the ground over clerical errors and our countries refusal to give up it's failed 'war on drugs' (=war on Freedom and People)

>=| You hear 'Home Grown Terrorist' on the news a lot. But we're training them every day, and paying for it with taxes.

I remember one incident where they falsefied documents to get a saposed drug dealers house and murdered the old lady that was living there. Once they found out it was the wrong house they planted coke and weed there. The family was able to get like 1-1.5 million. Unfortently the cop heading it only got 10 years and some of the others just got a few.

Glad to see the bad guys at least did some time & the family was rewarded.

Ya but then the taxpayer foots the bill for the wrongdoing of an aggressive public servant. It needs to be a crime for public officials to misuse their power.

I rather give our tax dollars to people here in the USA that need it than dish it out to some b.s. war over b.s. propaganda.

Police scare the shit out of me. Its why I dont ever drink and drive. And am super paranoid if Im riding dirty

I once smoked a joint while I had a cop follow me from the city up to the burbs & I knew he was a city cop. I was puffing & toking away while changing lanes & turning corners, for some odd reason, I felt pretty confident that night & I wasnt pulled over but he followed me the whole way up to my street where I lived but kept on going as I pulled into the drive way.

Was I crazy for smoking weed while a cop was following me, of course but I was young, like 21 & was wild times.
