Fake marijuana under real fire in Topeka

That didn't take long.

Just a few months after the public became aware of the legal sale of synthetic marijuana in Kansas, state lawmakers have a plan to snuff it out.

Rep. Rob Olson, an Olathe Republican, has legislation that would outlaw synthetic cannabinoids like K2, which are designed to mimic the chemical - but not legal - effects of marijuana.

"This is fast becoming the new drug of choice in the schools," Olson said.

Available for sale online and at a store in Lawrence, K2 comes in a small pouch for $15 to $30. It's a mix of dried herbs that look like oregano but is laced with chemicals designed to act on the brain like Mary Jane. There are other similar brands as well.

The active ingredients were manufactured in a lab and are just a few molecules away from the real thing. But right now K2 and similar products are legal -- even though the effects are reportedly similar to pot.

Johnson County police first discovered the drug was being used by ex-convicts on probation. They turned to K2 hoping it wouldn’t show up on drug tests as marijuana. Now police say they're finding it in high schools.

"We started getting calls from concerned citizens, from probation officers, from high school police," said Johnson County Sheriff's Master Deputy Chris Farkes.

Olson, joined by Farkes and two other law enforcement officers from Johnson County, said Monday (the first day of the 2010 session) that K2 and similar products should be banned because, for one reason, the drug's legality gives users a false sense of security, when the effects of K2 and similar products haven't been studied.

The legislation would make possession of K2 or other marijuana lookalikes a misdemeanor.

If I was on probation/drug tested for work all those JWH compounds would be looking mighty attractive. Sure pot feels better on the body and mind than those Rc's, but they still do the job pretty well.

man nothing beats the real thing, its so nice to smoke the good ganja. Those "Spice-a-likes" are just weird and way too expensive! But I dunno, i guess they have their purpose with people afraid of drug-tests and shit like that.. but I don't really like the effects of the herbal spice blends.

I remember my P.O. saying something like "it's only a matter of time" before these get outlawed...guess she was right. oh well, the real thing is always better.

I have tried K2, and it is the best "legal high" I have experienced (better than Spice, Magic Gold/Slive, and Dream). I suspect that it has JWH-073 in it, based on people's descriptions of that compound, though I am not sure.

Legal highs work for me, since I live in a country with really intense drug laws, and I can't find the real stuff anyway.

I will refer you all to the Federal Analog Act. Any chemical, regardless of it's schedule status, that is similalar to or that attempts to mimic the effects a scheduled drug shall be treated as schedule I or II. The only stipulation is that it has to be marketed as "for human consumption".
It looks like it's sold as incense.
However, it's also illiegal to use a chemical other than as directed. So, I guess as long as you use it in the privacy of your own home, your safe. Damn gov't thinks of every angle...

It has to be similar in structure as well as effect; these synthetic cannabinoids are chemically nothing like the natural ones and so aren't covered.

I didn't realize that. I thought just advertising to be like a substance was enough. Like if on the package if it said "like marijuana" but better. I assumed that's why they're selling it as an incense and have bold lettering "not for human consumption" Ether way, all the gov't has to do is just schedule it. I'm sure they'll get their way to "protect" us and "promote the general welfare". Funny how that line comes right before "secure the blessings of libertry" huh?
