DETERMINED to get drugs into a music festival, Zane Raffie pretended to be doing electrical work inside a Sydney Olympic Park stadium so he could stash his pills days before the event.
As young people continue to go to extreme lengths to smuggle drugs into music festivals, Raffie, 21, came up with the bold plan to stride into Spotless Stadium dressed as an electrician, drill some holes and fix a box to a wall to hide his drugs.
Zane Raffie, 21, pretended to be working as an electrician at the Sydney Olympic Park to plant drugs inside a stadium a week before a dance music festival.
He was recently sentenced in Burwood Local Court to a two-year good behaviour bond after pleading guilty to the brazen drug smuggling attempt ahead of last year’s Stereosonic festival.
It was the same festival at which pharmacist Sylvia Choi, 25, died after taking MDMA.
Raffie, an apprentice electrician, was wearing a high-vis yellow and blue work shirt advertising an electrical company when he was spotted drilling holes near Gate D about 8.24pm on November 20 — eight days before Stereosonic.
Police facts tendered to the court state that NSW Royal Agricultural Society events manager Shannon Hocking became suspicious of Raffie “as there were not supposed to be any contractors or electricians on site”.
She watched a second man wearing a head torch approach Raffie and hand him a package and then walk back outside to a white car.
The facts state that when Raffie began hammering loudly Ms Hocking “challenged (him) as to why he was there”.
He responded: “I’m an electrician” and then picked up a black bag containing drill bits and walked off.
Ms Hocking contacted security who checked CCTV cameras for the car in question and called police.
Police said they traced the car registration to Raffie’s Green Valley home and confronted him there.
Raffie told police that he jumped a fence to get into the stadium.
“It was his intention to fix a dummy junction box to the bricks in order to conceal 10 MDMA capsules for the upcoming Stereosonic music festival,” police said.
Raffie told police that he planned to share the pills with a friend.
Raffie pleaded guilty on February 18 to charges of destroying or damaging property, possessing prohibited drugs and entering enclosed land without a lawful excuse.
Four days after Raffie’s arrest, Ali Ghoneim, 22, was allegedly caught trying to hide 95.5 MDMA tablets at Sydney Olympic Park.
Ghoneim has not yet entered a plea to supplying a prohibited drug and his case will return to Burwood Local Court on March 9.
