The first month of the fact of the month contest started slow and we didn't get a huge amount of submissions, but the ones that we did get were interesting and the voting thread for the final 5 at the end of the month actually got a lot of votes and it seemed that the regulars here liked the contest.

I'm just going to create a quick poll that will last 2 weeks to see if people want this contest to run, as there is not much point in my pushing it as much as I tried to last month if people are not interested.

Obviously there will be no contest this month so if it starts up again it will start in October.

So what do you say guys??

Do you think that Basic Drug Discussion would benefit from a Fact of the Month Contest??


Feel free to discuss the idea in this thread too, along with any suggestions on how to improve or change the contest.
 
Going to sticky this overnight so it is at the top of the page.

Would be nice for the people that have voted to make a post, even just one sentence to say why they think the contest is or isn't a good idea, or what could be done differently.
 
I liked the facts that came up last month. I do wonder though if it might have to be widened slightly - there are only so many fascinating facts about drugs that people can come up with, after all - perhaps broadening it to harm reduction tips as well as general facts might make it more viable? Although comparing interesting-but-useless facts with dull-but-useful tips would be quite tricky..
 
I say yay. It's cool to read facts people post/ post facts myself...and I want a custom title ;)
 
I think there needs to be a lot more ballot stuffing /s

anyways I personally think that if the topic is overly broad that people will have trouble coming up with facts. Perhaps you could pick a different theme each week, e.g. opioids, impurities and mistakes, stimulants, neurotransmitters and neuropeptides, etc.

I like the idea of a different subject each month, like they do in the photography contest in SO. Problem with this being basic drug discussion is that there are not as many categories that could be chosen. It is certainly something to consider though.

Going to unsticky this again and let it roam BDD like a bad smell.

From the responses so far, it looks like I will start this up again next month, with some improvements.

Any more feedback or suggestions as to how the contest can be better will be muchly appreciated.
 
I have voted for it but felt a bit lost when trying to come up with anything interesting....more a bit of a lack of self confidence on my part than anything...hey it cost nothong lets give it another go
 
I think it would be fun! Plus you learn something new right?.. Are all the facts going to be drug related, or does anything go? My husband and I are full of useless facts... it's funny our friends always make fun of us because we know the most random crap but it makes for interesting conversation.

I definatly think there's a value to a fact of the month, perhaps it can be re vamped to make it more fun or interesting... or make some kind of incentive for people to be involved.
 
I think we do need to change it slightly, and having a different topic each month could do that nicely..

New topics each month are definitely a great idea, and I think that will be implemented. I also think that I need to bring back the sticky at the top of the forum that displays the past winners and the facts that they posted.

Also maybe having a poll every other month to let the public decide on a topic one month and the moderators decide the next month. To get everyone involved. Mod and member topics on alternate months could work pretty well.

I'm not sure what other incentive to get involved that could be offered other than the custom title to the winner each month and their winning fact being displayed proudly in a sticky at the top of the forum forever.

I think it's pretty neat that no one has yet voted 'absolutely not'. That says something, eh? DO it! (or, keep on keepin on)

I must say, though, that as much as I use this site, this is the first I've heard of it (the fact of the month, thing). If more input is desired there must be a way to make this idea stand out a bit more. It's not just me that missed it, is it!?8o
 
^ the first month it was held was August, and it got missed this month for various reasons.. I had a link to it in my sig for a while, but no one reads our sigs anyway, do they? ;)

edit: aw cool loulou, fair enough! :D I imagine most poetry loses a certain something when it is translated..
