hi

i just added this to the forum guidelines. we're going to start rolling this out very soon:

Threads about specific movies (threads with a FILM: prefix) will automatically be turned into polls with 4 options allowing the movies to be rated by the forum participants. We use a scale of 1-4 stars (
16.gif
) which apply as follows:

1 star: not recommended
2 stars: watchable
3 stars: enjoyable
4 stars: must see

If you start a thread to discuss a movie and you do not wish the rating to be applied, simply say so in the thread or email or PM the forum moderators.

Note that the ratings are simply an informal guide to enjoyment based on the opinions of the forum participants. The ratings system does not seek to suggest suitability of the material for a particular audience (e.g children).

for an example of what a typical movie thread will now look like, check here:

http://www.bluelight.ru/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=148333&r=0

we're looking to make this change as soon as possible so please feel free to add comments in this thread asap.

regards

no it's a fine idea. saves all that unnecessary reading to find out if the film is any good :)

will there be a way to search f&t by star rating?

^^^ well, i *think* that searching for "
16.gif
" (the actual syntax, not the picture itself) multiplied by as many stars as you want, would work.

i'm not entirely sure (and will probably have to wait until this gets off the ground), but this or something similar would surely work :)

fwiw, i think it's a great idea, btw.

Again: Great idea. i have no suggestions for improvement, and no insult meant to other current or former F&T mods.. but why wasn't this thought of earlier? i guess simple innovations slip by easily :)

i don't know the answer to that - perhaps ideas must simply wait for their time to come?

thanks for the kind words.

I have one suggestion, how about a 5-star rating that would stand for:

Brilliant!

Clearly not too many movies would fit this category but the deserving ones should be recognized ;)

^ when we started discussing the idea, we were talking about a scale of 1-10 but felt that something much lower was an appropriate level of granularity which balanced being able to see a nice spread of opinion with utility in the face of a small number of respondents.

i expect we could have achieved this with 4 or 5 stars but we plumped for 4 and it would be a little laborious to go back and fix it now.

i think 'brilliant' and 'must see' are reasonably synonymous.

thanks for the feedback.

i just added this to the forum guidelines:

The average rating is the number in parentheses in the thread title. The average is only calculated for movies with at least 10 votes. Also, averages are calculated on a somewhat casual basis. If you see a movie whose average needs to be corrected, simply report the thread.
