F.D.A. blames D.E.A. for amphetamine shortages

If you go to college for 6 years studying the effects of various drugs and your job is to make scientific discoveries, wouldn't you want to be paid for them? People in this field are underpaid as it is.

You're kidding, right?

my insurance only covers adderall, it does not cover the generic brand, while i have to pay 10 dollars for adderall its 300 for the generic brand, which I do not understand at all

Sounds like your insurance has a deal worked out with the drug maker. I've seen it before with other drugs like Lipitor and Protonix. In your case this is a good thing because most people are screwed right now.

Docs write pretty consistently for generics. They really only seem to write for brand if they think their patients are well-insured enough to not be bothered with a prior authorization. This is a case where pharmacists are simply forced to sell brand name products. Before Big Pharma stopped giving chotchkes to pharmacies, about 3/4 durable promo items were for CII's. I have heard pharmacists spout bullshit about better bioavailability of brand vs. generics in regards to ADD meds, and there is no reason other than they bought some pharm rep's line.

Does anyone know if Dexedrine or it's generics have been effected? Hopefully my doctor will be switching back to some type of amphetamine for my ADHD b/c the Ritalin isn't nearly as effective, but I'm having worse side effects with it- only tried it b/c it's easier to get, at least in Virginia.

Thanks in advance for the help, D

I don't think dexedrine has been affected, as my store gladly sold some non-moving product to another store. You can get a full list of drug shortages at the FDA's website, but I'm too lazy to look right now.

^Someone posted the link further back in this thread (I think).
This has got to be some killer bullshit. There is no shortage of generic pharm Adderall.

If this is true, the reason why there is still plenty of good old d-amp is because everyone was prescribed Adderall and Vvyan.

Alternet recently posted a great article that sheds light on this situtation.

http://www.alternet.org/drugs/15317...contrived_the_great_american_adderall_drought

The short version is that Shire Pharma has exclusive rights to supply amphetamine salts to generic manufacturers and are witholding it to drive up sales of Vyvanse.
God I hate Shire even though I love adderall. That article is wrong, IV lisdexamfetamine was felt way more than the placebo, thats why the DEA didn't make CIII, otherwise great article. The original Obetrol was a mixture of d-meth hcl and saccharate, amphetamine sulfate and dextroamphetamine sulfate, though it was reformulated to the same as adderall. Both Adderall and Vyvanse are a scam, doesn't do nothing dexedrine didn't do.Adderall's mixed salts are absorbed the same as plain amphetamine sulfate and vyvanse still has decent abuse potential and neither are XR(except Adderall XR), oh well maybe some(most?) doctors are still dumb enough to think either is less abusable and still prescribe them, and thats a good thing:).

It's fucking bullshit, how can you have problems making a 130 year old drug? You'd think they'd got the process down by now. It seems patient are getting double penetrated by the evil corrupt DEA and the evil greedy pharmacutical companies.

I don't see dexmethylphenidate, dextroamphetamine, or methamphetamine on the FDA shortage list, think I should ask my doctor to switch to desoxyn? Only cause of the shortage of course.;)
