Hi all,
I have some cough suppressant and I'd like to take a DXM trip. I have 500 mL of it and it has 3 mg of DXM HBr per mL but also 1 mg of ephedrine hydrochloride. I plan to do the extraction like this:
1) make freebase DXM by introducing sodium carbonate to the mixture
2) and some gasoline (from a pharmacy) thus dissolving the DXM
3) add some citric acid in solution to the gasoline-containing part

Now, does the ephedrine come to the end product too? If it does, is there an easy method to get rid of it.

Thanks!

It is very likely that the ephedrine comes to your end product in addition to the DXM, as both are amines (have a basic nitrogen atom).

Ephedrine freebase is a liquid while DXM freebase is a solid, so in principle if you add base to a solution of your final product, DXM should crystallize while the ephedrine floats on the top of the solution as an oil. Not sure though, its possible that the free bases of eph and dxm are soluble to each other.

For all the reagents and effort you're putting in you might as well buy DXM online, with an ideal yield you're only looking at 1500mg DXM. And I think the stuff online sells for $15/gram, but seriously man... you're getting high off cough syurp...
