A Lower Sackville, N.S., man who was badly injured in a house explosion Saturday remains in critical condition at a Halifax hospital.

Police were called after neighbours reported seeing a man in his underpants on fire on Margaret Street off Sackville Drive.

Halifax RCMP said the man had a licence for medical marijuana. He was mixing isopropyl alcohol with cannabis to make hash oil in his basement, police said.

Staff Sgt. Bruce Webb said the man was using a rice cooker when the mixture overheated, exploded and set the man on fire.

"What the gentleman was doing was very, very dangerous. He will be scarred for life with his burns. There is extensive fire, smoke and water damage to his home," Webb said. "It's just a terrible tragedy for an event that was highly illegal."

The man is being treated in the burn unit at the Queen Elizabeth II hospital.

While the man has a licence to possess medical marijuana, it remains illegal for anyone to make hash or hash oil.

Webb said police will monitor the man's condition before they make a decision about laying drug charges.

Hash is illegal, even though weed is legal for him?
They might press charges on him for drugs?

This is all very strange to me.

He was in his undies when he caught fire?
Horrible, but slightly funny in a dark, sick humorous kind of way.
(Still, I wouldn't wish this on anyone.)

yeah. You can get a federal license to grow/smoke pot, but oil is not covered by that, and making hash is certainly not allowed.

The rules are odd and a bit silly, but if you follow them there is no legal means to fuck you over if you are doing everything properly with your med card.

In short: stupid guy evaporates flammable substance in small enclosed, possibly unventilated area, sets underpants on fire. Cool.

yeah.

solution:
make hash oil in the nude, so if your dumb enough to blow shit up, your underwear wont catch fire and burn your balls.

Police were called after neighbours reported seeing a man in his underpants on fire on Margaret Street off Sackville Drive.

911: What is your emergency
Caller: My neighbour is running around in his underpants on fire.
911: Sir it is a crime to prank call 911

Still, as funny as that situation looks on the surface, being a burn victim is one of the most painful and horrific things that can happen to someone, and all over some hash.

I totally expected this guy to be doing a butane extraction.

It takes talent to explode some IPA and catch yourself on fire.

As opposed to minimally illegal, or somewhat illegal?

my buddy at work, this happened just a couple of doors down from his apartment. its rediculous that making hash is illegal even with a medicinal permit...

Yeah I figured the same thing. Are rice cookers sealed though? If it's sealed and designed to boil water at fairly low pressure, I can imagine that heating IPA in it to 20 degrees above its boiling point could make it explode. Then damaged, hot, electronics and a big cloud of IPA vapour...

"It's just a terrible tragedy for an event that was highly illegal."

I really can't make sense of that either...

Listen,

To everyone in this thread that is laughing at the fact that someone nearly burned to death needs to see a fucking threapist because there's something wrong with you. Grow the fuck up, I hate when people laugh at other peoples pain. It's funny on the surface sure, but think about what this man has to live with now? He was trying to make a drug that several of us have used, and his entire life is going to be hell now because of it.

Do you laugh when a heroin addict loses an arm from shooting tar?
Do you laugh when a meth cooker's lab blows up spewing acid all over them?

If so, get help.

PS: This is a harm reduction website, this man's life has been changed forever due to drugs, that is what we try to prevent here, not laugh about.
