Explaining you want a prescription without sounding like a drug abuser

I have quite debilitating social anxiety, It is something that has plagued me almost constantly since I was 18 when it lead me to quit university. I have been to several doctors about this in the hopes of receiving some kind of prescription for medication to help me out when the fear becomes too much to bare. When she was around 16 my sister was placed on SSRI's, the most problamatic of which was sertaline, which sent her depression into a manic level leading her to attempt (and very nearly succeed) suicide. I have twice been prescribed citalopram, the first time I used it it made me feel extremely uncomfortable ALL THE TIME, like my bones were too big for my skin. The second time I didn't bother to fill out the script. Despite my aversion to such medications, every doctor I go to refuses to consider alternative medications like benzos or buspirone, often because they claim they are worried I will abuse them. I honest to god am not looking for something to get high on, If i wanted them for that I'd buy them off a drug dealer. I have tried discussing being put on these medications with doctors (which leads to the abuse argument) and feigning ignorance to my problem and possible solutions to it, (which leads to "Oh, you just need ssris"). What can I say to my doctor to convince him to let me at least go on a trial of a medication which doesn't give me fear of death at the thought of swallowing it?

:D that made me laugh ^. Then it made me sad because it would probably work. What a twisted twisted world we live in.

Hi Bennyboyoyoy, welcome to Bluelight.

Sorry, this is exactly the kind of question we're not here to answer. No matter what spin you put on it or how honestly you think you need access to that class of meds, you're asking for instructions on doctor shopping. My advice is to get a referral to a psychiatrist or psychologist and go from there. Seeing a GP (or multiple GPs?) and being bounced around between different SSRI/SNRIs isn't going to offer much help in my experience.

I'll leave this thread open only so that people can offer you advice on dealing with social anxiety. Anyone giving hints as to how to procure benzos will have their posts removed.

We seem to have this question pop up quite a lot.... Here's a recent thread on the same topic:

With the nick me "benny"boyboy. Isn't it obvious you want us to teach you how to doct shop and get on some bennys????

LOL.

anyways like Belarki said. instead of going to gps and gps. actually get a specialist appointment with psychiatrists and actual work your problem out there. (that is if you really have these anxiety problems, or you just wana get high) Not judging here YO.

Booze is great for killing those anxiety issues I find personally

you are a fucking drug abuser... sorry to state the obvious.

You're just like the rest of us around here who once thought it was cool to get benzos out of docs because ya could.

I'll give one tip, describe YOUR anxiety problems in length, perhaps add panic attacks to the mix - frequently suffering them...

thats a recipe for xanax, i hope you know the issues well... (i do suffer panic disorder, but i havent had an attack in a long time, one might say i abuse xanax at times... but i dont use it every day)

THere are so many different anti depressants out there, that just one specific type that is suggested by one doctor may not be the right one for you. It takes a while to figure out which one is good for you, alot of trial and error. It may take years, if you really are worried about your anxiety and truly want to help yourself get better you will try and try until you find the right one. Valium and Xanax is not a solution, it may fix it now but antidepressants will fix you if you find the right one.

If you are just a benzo lover then get someone else to get them for you if you cant.....

Shut the fuck up ibis, you have no right calling him a drug abuser. Whilst i agree with everything said by otheres realating to us not encouraging/teaching doctor shopping, he very well may be suffering a very bad case of anxiety. I know myself, i have to buy clonazapam black market now just to take low doses to get threw social anxiety issues, and i can tell you as u would know, its a fucked up condition..really limits your opputinties with meeting people and mainting good friendships. A psych is probably your best option because to most gp we're all just drug seekers..

You say you can easily get them on the black market so really, that's probably going to be the easiest option.

Having suffered panic disorder and social anxiety, I stand by cbt as the best (and probably only) way to cure anxiety problems. Benzos just reduce the symptoms, but in saying that, benzos have been a help to me during my worst periods. I used them only as a last resort though and I only go through 50 ativan every 6 months to a year. I do believe they should only be used as a crutch to help you start making the behaviourial changes that will lead to long lasting change. They should never be seen as a 'fix', as to deal with anxiety you have to face your symptoms, rather than suppress or avoid them.

You could try suggesting a daily/weekly pick up of benzos, to ensure you don't abuse them.
