I found an old bottle laying around and was wondering if it is safe to ingest. Expired 3/2003, so obviously not fresh. Crystals have formed but liquid is still clear.. In researching this online, I've seen it said that these crystals may be the codeine solidifying. Could that be true? If so would it be worth filtering them out?

Could you elaborate on what this is, ie. what the active ingredients in it are?

Sorry, new at this. Looks like it a generic version of Robitussin A-C. Active ingredients codeine and guaifenesin.

I'm not too sure about the specific properties of the drugs, though after almost 10 years I expect they've degraded a fair amount. Since it contains a lot of sugar too, you're also risking stuff like bacteria getting in and having free reign over the bottle for the last half decade.

Honestly don't think it's worth it, it's just a bottle of cough syrup that's gonna cost fuck all in a pharmacy, not like you found a giant bottle of hydromorphone =D not worth risking your health over

The crystals are more likely to be sugar, since it's a sugary syrup and the same happens with aged honey as it dries.

Although if the sugar is recrystallizing, that should mean that the syrup is fully saturated... which makes bacterial growth incredibly difficult. So it could still be sterile.. Had the seal been broken?

I'm pretty sure I'd drink that shit dude, who wouldn't? But yeah the crystals aren't codeine-- it's sugar. And its likely still potent enough to get you high. HR view imo, is to drink it.

If you do end up drinking it, please let us know the codeine/guaf ratios beforehand. Eating too much of the latter isn't recommended.

I have a bottle of MYTUSSIN AC, a codeine-guaifenesin preparation, and it appears to be unopened. The prescription was written for me back in October, 2005. The liquid is clear in the red bottle, with no crystals forming, so I'm wondering if it's safe to use. Anyone have an idea if it could degrade to anything dangerous? Thanks.

in very few states you can buy codeine containing cough syrups OTC so i'd check to see if you can buy it in your state before drinking old syrup. Many times nothing happens.

has it been opened before? non active ingredients?
