Opioids Expired Codeine Linctus... still OK to drink?

OK very quick question here. Basically I have a bottle of Codeine linctus, 15mg/5ml, but the expiry date is December 2011.

So not that much out of date, but ideally I would like to be able to keep it for another few months until the right time to do it arises.

So my question is, what does the expiry date actually mean on these things? Its a sugary alcohol solution, so what ingredient exactly is going off? Is it anything potentially harmful? Or, does Codeine degrade significantly after a certain time, so my expired bottle will be gradually decreasing in potency?

Or is it just a precautionary date with little real meaning?

I can't give you a scientific answer, but personal experience has shown me that expired drugs work pretty goddamn well for me. I've taken the liquid hydrocodone bottle about 6 months after it expired and noticed no difference.
