Just a thought that a friend of mine, 'cid, brought to my mind. Actually collection of complex questions and thoughts that have kept me thinking for hours, days.
I am going to try my best to explain my dilemma, as it is very confusing.
The 'Universe' is of infinite size, no one knows how far it extends. Keep in mind that if it is infinitely big, it is also infinitely small (1/infinity).
I have been thinking of things in relation to each other.
i.e. electrons spin around protons to make up atoms, which make up molecules, which make up matter (basis of everything that exists), which make up organelles, which make cells, which make organs, which make beings, which live on the earth, which, with other planets spins around the sun, which is a star - one of many that sparkle our sky.
Are we, on this planet, organelles of a cell that makes up one of many in another 'being'?
Is this planet spinning around the sun part of an atom?
Do the atoms that make up everything around us contain solar systems, a 'universe'?
Do such complex systems extend to beyond the reaches of human comprehension, or can we pick up a handful of dirt and hold infinite 'universes'?
I hope i have explained this enough.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

thats some interesting philosophical discussion - i like the thoughts of small universes, because it has a point - what defines a universe? is there such a thing as nothing? no atoms or molecules or air or gas, just nothing. Would that be the black hole? i don't claim to be a physicist or astronomist, and i don't believe that everything is explained by science.
I also like the concept of every individual being on this earth are actually part of a larger "life" form (i think thats what you meant?!) and are there parallel realities?
on another topic, i have been reading a little of Jean Paul Sartre lately and i find his ideas on existentialism interesting and the many different ways of interpreting that.
i think your friend 'cid sounds like an intelligent and inquisitive person, do you have any answers to your friend's questions?
i think i'll get back to you on the handful of dirt, infinite universes idea

some interesting question that stopped and made me think and won't go away now! won't rest until i KNOW the answers

interesting concept...
i don't really think it could be true, however. if the earth and its inhabitants were a part of a larger being.... that being would have cancer.

ANy picture we can construct of the universe and represent with language will always be subject to serious limitations. We can talk about whatever we like but are we ever takling about anything or is meaning just endlessly deffered . . .
I say: just sit back and enjoy the ride and not concern yourself with the vehicle or where its apparently headed.

I tend to think that the more thaought that goes into this the more time u waste. I would always love to find out thinks that are unknown like the questions u are asking. Yet I don't know of anything that would be able to prove something like this. Therefore I just relate to the enviorment that I sense.
I just go with what I feel is right perhaps that is just something that is a little electron in a big atom but I don't tend to worry to much about things like this I just feel it is better to relax and let things be the way they are and enjoy them for it.
