What is your favourite performance enhancing drug?

Whether you work at home or in a sky-high office block in the city, chances are your answer was caffeine.

Caffeine is the world’s most popular psychoactive drug and has similar pharmacological effects on the body as many illegal substances we associate with doing harm.

“When I go to the gym I don’t perspire, I actually percolate,” said my client Bob when I asked him how his fitness program was going. Two months earlier Bob had approached me after I spoke at a real estate conference and asked if I could help him to get healthy again. “I drink between 25 to 30 cups of coffee a day.” he admitted.
Yes, caffeine in its many guises is a drug and Bob is what I call an executive drug addict. Are you? To determine if you suffer from caffeine addiction, ask yourself the following questions.

1. Do you have to drink coffee to kick-start every day?

2. Do you regularly rely on coffee/caffeinated drinks to boost energy throughout the day?

3. When you miss your daily caffeine intake, do you develop a headache?

4. Do you get anxiety, mood swings and feel irritable when you drink too much or too little caffeine?

5. Do you drink more than 300mg (two to three cups) of coffee a day?

6. Do all the employees at your local coffee shop know your name and everything about you?

If you answered YES to three or more of the above questions, it’s a safe bet that you’re a caffeine addict.

Now before you fire up and feel the urge to throw your freshly brewed cappuccino or piccolo in my face – let me present both sides of the caffeine equation.

A 2010 study by the Mayo Clinic suggests that caffeine in moderation does have some positive effects and can protect against Parkinson disease, Type 2 diabetes and liver cancer. And 2011 research presented in The Journal of Physical Chemistry highlights that caffeine is one of the richest sources of healthful antioxidants that may help to protect from Alzheimers.

But our ‘caffeine culture’ is increasingly being used as the glue to build relationships and meeting up for a coffee has become part of the corporate mantra. More and more people catch up for a coffee in place of going to the pub for a few schooners, and lycra-clad cyclists spend hours talking about how good they could have been over a latte or two following the morning ride.

For most people caffeine in moderation is fine, and moderation is generally accepted as less than 300mg a day. (Refer to the chart at the end to work out how much caffeine you consume per day)

25-30 cups wtf, never heard of someone drinking that much, the crash must be terrible

^Yeah that much coffee is totally insane. My grandpa told me once that back in the '20s-50s it was common for people to drink over 20 cups a day, especially office workers. They probably just had a crazy tolerance, but I can't imagine drinking that much coffee. I usually have 3 or 4 shots of espresso a day. That, or 3-4 pots of tea.

Jesus, I sometimes drink 1 shot of espresso at work if i'm properly tired. Like once every few weeks, that shit makes me feel hooooorrible after a couple hours.

Fuck 30 cups a day, seriously.

When i was working 10hour shifts, the people at my work would go through 5-6 (500ml) Rockstar Energy cans every single day, the worst part of it is they don't even realize how dependent they are on it. The long-term health effects must be enormous..

I can barley drink half a cup of coffee before i feel on edge and anxious.

I used to work at a call center-type job, and everybody there was drinking a mixture of energy drinks, coffee and 5-hour energy shots. One of the supervisors drank three or four cans of Monster energy drinks a day, plus coffee.

However, most people in my department (myself included) skipped caffeine and went right to amphetamine.

amps > caffeine for sure.; caffeine is dirty-- more negative physical effects than amps, and does not provide one lick of euphoria.

I was up to over 12 cups a day, then realized how stupid it was.

I have cut way down, but unfortunatly it is somewhat of a neccesary evil. 45-50 hour work week and school... fuck it. I try and keep it to 3 or 4 a day now though. Days I have off maybe 1 in the morning just so I don't get a headache :-(

I sometimes have 1-2 cans of Relentless/Rock Star/Red Bull a day when i'm at uni. When I was working last summer I was on anywhere between 2 - 6 cans a day, it was so bad. It doesn't help I fucking love the taste of them lol.

I can't handle caffeine in more than very low doses, even though I use to have a fairly strong soda habit. I get super jittery from energy drinks. The only reason I drink them is if I'm doing a long drive with no sleep after a festival. I'll usually grab an energy drink or two at the first gas station I stop at and make it home fine. In every day situations, where I'm not as active or haven't been as active, that energy gets pent up and I get anxious.

I use to enjoy monster when I was younger until I drank like 4 in 3 days and the last one was combined with Vyvanse+Everclear and I threw up and have had like 1 since then.
