This may upset. I hope not. But...
For over two years I read BL before I joined, almost all of that time in OD. Phreex was by far the most informative of the ODers. He was my favorite, and I sought his posts out. I think it quite possible I've read everything he posted here and at the OD off-site since 2000. He was well-read, highly intelligent, very well-trained, a good writer, and above all, HONEST. He did not play games with BLers or himself. He did not suffer fools or assholes gladly, although he would be gentle and helpful to those who did not pose or project attitude.
I've not seen anyone refer to his long post of over a year ago, in which he detailed how completely opioids ruled his life. In it he stated that EVERY significant moment or relationship of his post-juvenile life was influenced by opioids. It was the most powerful and, yes, beautiful, of his works, and was searingly, brutally honest. And it was heartbreakingly sad. It was so obvious to me he was in tremendous emotional pain, and had been so for years. Yet he did not whine or beg sympathy. What he did was what so many in pain do: he sought the solace of Morphus, healing by the fruit of the lotus.
But it is that honesty which was Phreex's hallmark. And whether he is where is now because of accident or intent, he would freely admit, I think, that opioids owned so much of him. I don't know him other than through BL, but I can easily imagine that this event could have been an act of defiance on his part, a final revolt to overthrow and cast off that which held him in bondage.
And it makes me think as well. Not about how we need to be careful, it can happen to anybody, never use alone, etc. But why we're using in the first place. Why we're doing something that has led us to bondage, or puts us at risk of losing our independence, compromising our judgment.
I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, and I certainly don't want to dishonor Dave. Indeed it is my respect for his honesty that makes me ask these questions. I know I'm going to look hard. And I don't see right now how I can justify grabassing and giving fentanyl advice or the like. We'll see.
Go with God, Dave.
