I had a dream last night -- that I went to visit Dave in florida.
I have had prophetic dreams in the past. Perhaps this means that Dave will live and that I will get to see him again.
Dave -- you have the chance to turn it all around. You always have.
Julia

I don't know him or anything but I hate when bad things happen to people...I hope his family is doing all right...lets all hope for the best.

Sam - thank you so very much for the constant updates - i've only posted in this thread once before but i've read it about a dozen times since seeing it on wednesday morning...
from the latest neurologists report, however, i must disagree with some of you...
if PhreeX is to pull through out of this with "extensive" brain damage, then i must hope for the best that he doesnt make it through... i've known people who underwent extensive mental damage from accidents (1 from car crash, 1 from drowning), and believe me that in the long run, the pain, the heart-ache, the dedication (constant, unparted and unending) of the families to support their loved one is simply not worth it... such events destroy not only the person, but an entire family, and all this to maintain the person in life, but not a human life, just an animal life, where they eat, drink & sleep, but cannot talk, laugh, cry, love & hate...
that is no life for a person who loved life like PhreeX...
please do not be angry at me for posting this, maybe i should've kept this for myself, but i do truly hope he pulls through properly... but if he was to suffer such brain damage, then i must pray for the least painful outcome for him, his family and his truly close friends (i.e. those who would watch him degrade constantly afterwards)...
Best of luck to you Phreex, and thanks again Sam for the updates, please kep them coming...

I have a couple of things to say here- please skip anything that you may feel as offensive- it's not meant to be- I'm just trying to offer a voice of experience- I've lived this situation first hand- just over a year ago. My friend was deprived of oxygen to his brain after a car he was working on (the car of his dreams that he was restoring) fell on top of him...
The comment above is such selfish thinking... You have NO idea what it's like (obviously) to stand next to a bed with someone you knew and loved who was so strong, so capable, so intelligent who now can only lay there and do only the most primitive brain functions - breath, regulate heart beat, contract the bowels but with no real control. Sure, if you keep feeding them through tubes, they will "live" I've lived it. It's horrible. It's anti-living. It's a living HELL for anyone close to the person in the bed- family and friends. What kind of "life" is that for anyone iinvolved? People don't miraculously recover from severe brain damage- if you feed them, they will live a long, long time- until death finally takes them in old age, or some disease caught due to a weakened immune system... bbut that's not a decision for you or I, it's a decision for his family and closest friends.
My other point is for those most close to Dave right now- beware of over interpretting "good news" such as eye movement, arm movement etc. I'm not saying to be negative, or to not "think positively" but don't get your hopes up too high because it is the emotional ups and downs that are the most painful at times like these.
My friend went through all the same stages it appears Dave is going through. I saw my friend's wife be convinced by other's "enthusiasm" over "positive signs" that Matthew was going to "get well" come crashing back like an atomic bomb when "positive" was explained as "he'll breath on his own and live as long as he keeps 'eating' through a tube"
In the end, these ups and downs only made her suffering worse.
We made the decision to stop all artificial life support and had to watch him waste away- but it was done in a hospice facility and we made each day a wonderful day to spend with him till the end. Matt had told us all that he wanted to go that way if he ever ended up in such a situation- in fact he said this only 2 weeks before the accident- like a premonition, while we all sat around a camp fire one night. It's like he knew... most people have strong opinions about what they would and would not want done to "keep them alive" I'm sure Dave has told someone close to him his thoughts on this. Try to respect his wishes as much as possible if they are known.
I hope Dave continues to heal, but if he doesn't, I hope he can go peacefully to rest- I hope his family can find agreement and peace in whatever decision is made. My heart goes out to those actually INVOLVED- those standing next to him holding his hand- even feeling him grip it like he's about to stand up... hope for the best, but be realistic about the outcome. Try to even out the roller coaster and make sure everyone is taking care of each other as well as Dave. Everyone there needs help and support- not just Dave. I saw too many of my closest friends go completely bankrupt emotionally because they wouldn't take any time to heal themselves while Matthew passed. I saw too many become convinced by "positive" neurology reports almost become suicidal when they realized that what is positive to a neurologist is not quite the same as what is positive to a loved one. Take care of each other- and hope the best for Dave.
I know this is rambling, but I also hope that even one word of this gets through to those living with the situation in person with Dave. I do not pretend to know what it is like for you- I know what it was like for me- and I have empathy for you, but we all experience life in different ways even if the scene is the same. For me, this news has affected me because it has made me relive my experience from last year all over again and I hate to think of others having to deal with the same pain.
Good luck to all involved- Dave, his friends, his family, his loved ones. All of you will need healing...

Well said, Dr.grov
I know without a doubt that Dave would not want to live life as a vegetable (or even semi vegetable).
I pray that he recover completely, or else die. Those are the only two options I see as truly compassionate ones.

i've been on and off bl for the passed few years with several different names, i've neve really been a regular, i do lurk a lot though
i haven't visited bl in a couple months and when i saw this tears came to my eyes, i started at page one and read all ten carefully
one thing you know you can count on is posting in the Other Drugs section of bl and within hours you will have a dozen responses to your question, although i read everyone's and appreciated them all, i'd always make sure phreeX had responded cause i trusted him....i trusted him although i had never met/spoken to him
there is some sort of respect that circulates around his name, he is like a legend
i've gone through all sorts of emotions while reading through the ten pages....sadness, happiness, and then sadness again
my heart goes out to you dave, i wish you everything you want, and my heart goes out to his family and friends
shine on you crazy diamond!
:)
you are an incredible person
