umm i huffed white out once in the eighth grade.

i am now a high school drop out.

the amount of brain cells killed does not make the highness of it worth it. go get drunk instead.
 
Actually, the top layer has ether, heptane, and other nonpolar solvents. The bottom layer has water and other polar molecules. Both layers are not safe to huff. Even if you consider ether safe, the starter fluid (both layers) have other bad stuff in it. Ether isn't too safe though, it is explosive and you can die from overdose on it.
 
FUCK.

Damn, few months ago, went through an entire bottle of starter fluid. Did the whole process, thought the bottom was the heptane, and the top was ether. I kept at it for hours. Jeez. Well I'm not dead, and not feeling too much brain damage. Are you guys sure on the top/bottom? Someone got mixed up (possibly me). Fuck.
 
bah if you were heading in another direction besides huffing i'd help you. but nevermind, huff away.
 
yeah, ether huffing is not significantly different than any other inhalants i.e. freon, gasoline, glue, etc. only nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is different. the rest, youre just depriving your body of oxygen.

I just wanted to make sure people know that each layer has more than one chemical.
 
Oh good lord ether... Look, unless you know what you're doing (and you clearly don't, no offense), don't mess around with that. If you're using it for a chemical synthesis, your entire product is going to be contaminated by whatever other chems are in the starter fluid.

Plastic bag? No comment.

As far as 'huffing' medical grade ether? Well.. I can't reccomend it. A certain type of person might enjoy doing it once in his lifetime though...

(When your girlfriend arrives home to find you and your friends half-cranked in the living room and the house stinking, just tell her you left the gas on by accident and turned it off. Hahahahahhahaa..)
 
Well, ether is a medically recognized anaesthetic, so I assume its action isn't caused by oxygen deprivation.

There are no nociceptors (pain receptors) in the brain--you probably won't notice any damage until you start failing all of your exams and realize that you have no working memory. Organic solvents are for chemistry, not for ingesting. Not only are the severely carcinogenic, they are far more neurotoxic than any other commonly abused drug, even compounds like phencyclidine (PCP) and methylamphetamine.

Actually , the top layer contains the diethyl ether + water + other misc. chemicals.The bottom layer contains the Heptane (and other misc. chemicals). Everything else is correct though.

Heptane is not very soluble in water, it is almost negligible (but not when it comes to inhaling the end product). Ether is very soluble in water. The density of the heptane is higher than the ether/water mixture.
 
Wait... so what was I huffing? I used top layer. Some people say thats the heptane, some people say thats the ether. It was clear, bottom was cloudy. Only ether i've seen was clear. Meh.
 
I'm as severely confused as you are! Does any body know for a fact which layer contains the ether? Does that layer contain just ether, or ether dissolved in water?
 
HMm the only thing i know is that heptane will get you high too (just differently).
I think it's the ether that's on top. Well the density of ether is lower then that of water. So the weight will go down and the not so heavy stuff will float on top.
Do not know if it's true, anybody has more on this!?

If you have two seperated layers, one of which is aqueous and one of which is ether (water and ether won't stay mixed, they will seperate) the ether will be the top layer because it is less dense than water.

Lab Notes

622 grams of a certain diethyl ether-containing product was mixed with an equal amount of water and shaken. The solution was allowed to separate into two distinct layers (this took less than 30 seconds). The contents were then poured into a crude separation funnel-like device and the two layers were separated.

According to my previous post, the bottom layer was supposed to be heptane, and the top one diethyl ether and water. This is because ether is WAY more soluble in water than is heptane ( heptane is only soluble at .003g/100ml, or something to that effect).

Now, i still wanted to double check my work, so i took a small amount of each liquid (bottom and top layer) and placed it in a tall narrow container and closed it. I saw the two distinct layers again. Now, to check which layer contains the ether, i theorized (lol, theorized!) that the layer which contained the ether and water would grow if I added more water to the container, and the heptane layer would remain the same.

Results? Yea, I got 'em, but they don't make sense! The bottom layer grew! This means the bottom layer is the one containing the ether! But how can this be possible? Ether has a smaller density than heptane, and even ether mixed with water has a smaller density than heptane!

EDIT: Hold on, I think I just figured it out! Guh, Schizo! I mistook diethyl ether's density with ether's density ( I though they were the same thing?), fooling myself into thinking the ether would float, when in fact, it sinks in heptane. So there you have it folks, the BOTTOM layer CONTAINS ETHER!
