Not long ago I tryed extracting ether from an engine starter fluid(24% ether) by spraying it into a jar then by filling the jar up with water(I put in the same amount as I did with the starter fluid) and shaking it for a long time. Then I let it the layers settle and took off the top layer with a syringe.
Does anyone know what other shit besides ether is in this top layer because I read that ether is a colourless liquid and what I got was a clear gingery-orange colour liquid?

ahhh.... I'm no chemist so I'm probably wrong but some petrochemicals have that orange colour. Keep in mind, you are huffing Petroleum ether. Whatever colour it is it's not the greatest for your brain. Petroleum ether isn't what they used for anaesthetic, that was sulphuric ether or diethyl ether, which I'm guessing musn't be AS bad, but keep in mind none of these are great for you.
If in doubt read the side of the can, or call a poisoning hotline they may know what it is and if it's really bad.

Yes. I REALLY would not huff ANY of this stuff. You CAN find ether out there
if you try hard enough, and the buzz may be fun, but isn't fun enough to justify
the risk you're taking huffing something that could very well be quite toxic.
You'd be safer with computer duster, frankly.

Are you really this stupid?
From the OTC solvents FAQ:
2) Are ether and petroleum ether the same?
A: No! Petroleum ether is a petroleum product. "Real" ether is
more commonly known as diethyl ether or ethyl ether. Its chemical
formula is C2H5-O-C2H5, and it is not a petroleum product.
Diethy ether is the "ether" that was traditionally used as an
anesthetic the early 1900's. Petroleum ether is sometimes
referred to as "ether" because its solvent properties are similar
to that of diethyl ether (i.e. it dissolves similar types of
substances and has a low boiling point). Often (but not always),
petroleum ether and diethyl ether can be used interchangeably.
It is usually easier for the layman to obtain petroleum ether.
3) Where can I get petroleum ether?
A: Chemical supply houses usually can provide petroleum ether. Ask
for it by boiling fraction or specific component (e.g. hexane,
pentane, etc.). It is best to have a reasonable knowledge of
chemistry when purchasing chemicals or solvents from professional
establishments. Many substances are controlled to some extent.
Often they will ask you to show identification, and sign a
statement explaining what your intended use is. This information
can be provided to government agencies such as the DEA. Since
most laymen would have a difficult time bluffing their way in a
chem supply shop, they probably would be tempted to use an
industrial grade which may be more easily obtained from local
retailers. These may take the forms of mineral spirits,
petroleum spirits, naptha, [BOLD] automobile starter fluid[/BOLD], etc. See
the SOLVENTS section below for more information on these products
and where to obtain them. .
This isn't stuff you want to be ingesting. Basically it will get you high just by cutting oxygen circulation and is plenty fucking dangerous anyway. Or maybe you do want petroleum ether for some other reason but you really should say so.
Here is some info on petroleum ether.
