is there a way to separate the ephedrine from the guifenisen? I have 12.5mgephedrine Hcl and 200 mg of the cough stuff. can I separate it safely?

Simple acid-base extraction with sodium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid and a nonpolar solvent will do the job. This works because an ephedrine molecule has an amino group but a guaifenesin molecule doesn't. You can find good guides for acid base extraction on the net by googling.

Do do you really need to separate them? I can't imagine you have any need to separate them unless you are looking to synthesize methamphetamine or something else.
When I'm dieting, I regularly consume 4-6 of those 12.5/200mg pills 2-3x per day without any adverse effects. Guaifenisen can be tolerated pretty well as long as you aren't taking truly heroic doses.
