i was doing a bit of research on this cause i was curious to find out what makes pseudoehpedrine pseudo.
can anyone out there explain how these 2 are different. the only difference i can see it that in pephed the -OH is in the foreground and in ephed the -OH is in the background.
can anyone out there explain what purpose this serves.

That is all that is different. Pfed and ephedrine are enantiomers, a type of stereoisomers in which the molecules are mirror images of each other. That is why that one bond is pointed into the screen and the other one out. They are not the same thing just as your left hand is not the same as your right hand. This is straight from erowid btw.
 
Abra gave the best explanation of it...pseudo and ephed have the same chemical formula (i.e., they have the same kind and number of atoms in them) but they vary in their structure. They look the same except their orientation in space varies slightly. This may seem like it's not a big deal but even slight structurual/orientation variations in chemistry can have a tremendous effects on the function and nature of the chemical!
