coz of the brilliance of the colour/ clarity, i couldnt afford a bigger diamond, but it is beautiful...

there were ones of a much larger size, but the actual diamond was of a poor quality...

what did you get/ recieve?

what would have you prefered?

This is the ring I liked, and it was so expensive, we just put a cz in it at first. wasn't interested in spending 10k on a ring. The ring alone without the diamond was half that. Figure we will put in a diamond on our tenth anniversary or something, if even then. I am just not into spending that much money on a little piece of rock. Til then, put in new czs when it starts to look fake, and maybe even another less expensive gem I find and love. I LOVE my ring, it is gorgeous!!!

You don't HAVE to contribute to those evil diamond mines!! Get another gem in it, be different. =D

I don't have one, but looking at something a bit different, kind of like that below. It's not that I'm anti-diamond, b/c most of them have diamonds in them somewhere, but I just want something different and colorful.

demantoid garnets

If you want to check out some other (often rather expensive) non-diamond gemstones, I recommend cherry picked

There's also moissanite, which is a lab-created (although originally discovered in nature), but nearly identical alternative to the diamond.

Fizz, thinking of goign with a blue gem (topaz??) in mine too, and getting a band like this to go with it..but thinner, these look too thick.

Sounds like you got her a beautiful ring. The E color is great - color is something you can see very easily - and from the sound of it it seems like it's cut well.

Between the four C's, cut, color, clarity and carat weight, the biggest thing by far is cut. Then color. If you focus on those two, you will get a beautiful ring. Clarity doesn't matter unless there's a flaw you can see with the naked eye. If you can't see it, then it's not important. A well-cut diamond with good color (E or F especially) and the biggest carat weight that meets your budget is where it's at. A friend had his fiancee's diamond hand-picked by a famous diamond wholesaler because of a family connection, and the man picked a SI1 clarity but it's a flaw you can't see. The cut is so perfect that it sparkles like crazy, she gets comments on it regularly, and it looks bigger than it is. (This is for the U.S. In Asia, my impression is that clarity is more important than size. )

Check out this website if you're ring shopping. I just looked at it and it seems like it's changed from the message board it once was, but you should still be able to get lots of info from it.

I got my husband's great-grandmothers diamond.

It's a round brilliant cut. VS 1, colour E, nearly .5 carats. I had it reset in a semi-bezel setting, white gold flat band.

I'm very happy with it, but I'm not really a diamond person. Had my husband not had the diamond in his family, I would have gotten probably a .75 carat garnet (my favourite stone). We wouldn't have been able to afford more, and I wouldn't have wanted more either.

I'm very glad it's not a huge diamond as I have tiny hands and slender fingers and I think on me anything over a carat would look ostentatious. I'm also glad that the diamond is so colourless as I HATE yellowish diamonds.

.32 is a great size for a diamond. Just remember you don't have to break your wallet right now. You can always upgrade if you really wanted to.
hmm, i have a pink sapphire as my center stone. I also wanted something a little different. The pic of the ring itself is really bad... but someday Ill get a better pic.

I lost my left index finger in an accident when I was 2 and I think it looks better on my right hand as a result -- I dislike the asymmetry of my left hand.

Also, in Europe they are worn on the right hand and I'm not American...although I do live in the US.

Fizz, that first ring is breathtaking! I love the color and band. *sigh*

I tried finding a pic of mine online, but I can't find it. :\ It was 4 princess cut diamonds in the center then 4 smaller ones on each side of the main square with a two tone band, white gold with small yellow gold lines going across the band. Not exactly what I wanted at the time, but the ring wasn't my focus.

You could give her a life saver ring for a bit and I'm sure she wouldn't mind. It's the action and idea behind the object that matters. A statement for which I'm sure to catch slack for. ;) :p

yeah trancey, that first one (in 14kt white gold) is only about $600 too, which doesn't seem that bad imo

When people ask someone to marry them with a ring, how do they know that person's finger size? Do they measure it when the other person sleeps or something?
:)

^ yep. that or they grab a ring that already fits that finger and take it to the jeweller. if the ring's the wrong size you can always get it resized at the jewellers and wrap a thin piece of wire around the bottom of the ring to hold it in place until then.

but seriously, those lollypop rings are the BEST and i think they're one-size-fits-all.

I've received a 1/4th karat round stone diamond ring in a gold 4 prong setting, and also an 1/8th karat round stone diamond ring in a gold, two sided (the diamond sits in between two small bars of gold) gold band.

yea ive never really understood why its almost always diamonds for engagement rings. my moms has these black stones in it, its like a band with many of them in there and i think its freakn awesome.

but if it makes her happy ill do it and spend a small fortune on a rock. but ive got a few years till that happens.
