Energy drink hangover: which ingredient is responsible the most?

Hello all,

I quite often experience a hangover the day after too many vodka red bulls (lets say 30oz or more of energy drink alone). I get moderate anxiety, in some way resembling a hangover from amps.

It always puzzled me which ingredient would be the most responsible for that. Depending on the brand, it might be a difference of up to 10x times in quantity of caffeine, taurine, glucoronalactone, etc.

For a long time, I though the excess of glucoronalactone could be the main contributor, so I always chose drinks containing less of it. But after reading recent studies, I started to think that I could actually be benefit instead.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Ever consider that this hangover you experience from too many vodka red bulls might be a result of that one ingredient which is universally known to induce hangovers... Oh wait, vodka?

while I'm not ruling out the possibility that all the sugar and other shit in energy drinks won't leave you feeling bad in the morning - my bet is on the alcohol being part of the culprit.

I'd say dehydration could be part of the cause - caused probably both by the energy drink and the alcohol

Thanks for replying! Well, alcohol alone doesn't seem give me any sort of hangover, not even headaches. Anyway, that wasn't the case and maybe I shouldn't even have used the term "hangover", what I was referring to is the general anxiety feeling the day after too many energy drinks.

@mgrady3

Thanks for your reply. Yes, dehydration certainly came to my mind, and I believe its always a factor. But no, I've been severely dehydrate before, and it does not lead me to that type of anxiety. That was certainly caused by some sort of stimulant. I also must add that taking a xanax bar before going to sleep, will most likely solve the problem.

During the monster promotion if you collected 50 tabs and sent them in they gave you a free hoodie. I collected 100 over the summer and apparently have developed some kind of addiction to the stuff. I swear the free hoodie was their marketing scheme to get us all addicted to their drinks.

I will crave it in the car to the point that if we stop at a gas station I need to purchase one. This occurs almost daily. I could swear they put some kind of other addictive substance in it other than caffeine.

Actually caffeine is pretty addictive. I once had a bad addiction to caffeine, to the point that if I spent a day without it i would have terrible headaches.

Twoface, breaking a caffeine dependence is really easy if you treat it like any other drug, and taper slowly. Something about rebound adenosine during caffeine WD makes it feel so bad though, ugh.

I actually drink Rockstar No Carb on a daily basis, the one with no sugar and 120mg caffeine per 8 oz serving. I found it on sale for super cheap at Ralph's, so I stocked up. I treat it like any other drug, though, and titrate it carefully. I use a shotglass measurer to pour out 15-60mg (1-4 oz) per dose, which I take 3-4 times a day.

Low dose caffeine is surprisingly free of side effects other than insomnia, and is more useful than therapeutic doses of stimulants in reversing tiredness, imo, as it antagonizes adenosine.

Caffeine induced anxiety, ulcers, and dependence usually happen when people treat coffee (120-150mg caffeine) as just another drink, not as a drug delivery mechanism.
