To halt prescription drug abuse, the nationís fast-growing drug problem, Congress must require special training for doctors and other health care workers before they are allowed to prescribe powerful drugs such as OxyContin, White House drug czar Gil Kerlikowske said Tuesday.

The Obama administrationís Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention Plan calls on Congress to amend the Controlled Substances Act with a new requirement: that health care practitioners learn appropriate uses for opioid medicines and how to screen patients for drug abuse before they can get a Drug Enforcement Administration license to prescribe controlled substances. Opioids, such as hydrocodone, are synthetic drugs that mimic the effects of opium and can be used to treat severe pain. They can be highly addictive.

The DEA, Food and Drug Administration and the Department of Health and Human Services endorsed the plan.

This is pretty stupid if you ask me. Doctors aren't idiots, and doctors also have a obligation to treat their patients' pain.

I really wish the DEA would stop trying to be my doctor. At least my psychiatrist doesn't care.

I would of thought they went over that sometime during the 8 years of medical school.

It is only possible to dismantle them if, as a country, we end prohibition.

Even if they ended prohibition they wouldn't dismantle the DEA. They would stick around to make sure everyone was paying taxes on legit drugs and not buying "unapproved" drugs off the street. Just like we have the ATF even though alcohol tobacco and firearms are all legal. Sadly the DEA is never going anywhere until the our empire falls.

I dunno, if prohibition is truly ended, there's really not "unapproved" drugs available. Problems with drug usage would fall into the realms of FDA and LE, theoretically anyways. DEA is concerned w/ illicit sales/possession, and with that falling to just the underage crowd, it becomes more like cigarettes/alcohol and it's LE's purview.
