Embeda (Morphine/Naltrexone) - Potentially Dangerous

I've lurked here forever - delurking for one major reason. Embeda.

I've been on Opana (the oxymorphone one - not the rubber one, excuse my ignorance.) My doc said the one I was on is being cancelled due to a lawsuit, she has to change me to something else. She put me on those damn real Opanas - which didn't help the constant back & fibro pain one iota. So she changed me to THIS poison. For me it was poison -

I'm an enormous coward, this Emeda stuff is morphine, I was scared that 30mg twice daily would be too damn strong, I gag when I swallow pills so I have crushed and used them another way for years. Doc KNOWS this. Everybody does. Yet they gave me this shit!!!!!!!!

(Calm, calm.) So I treated it with all due caution - tried a tiny bit - oh god. INSTANT WITHDRAWAL - and I mean complete withdrawal inside less than 15 minutes. YES I'd researched it. Not much known - too new. THEN I researched deeply, found in some test they did - a 50+ year old man did the exact same thing as yours truly and damn near died - went to the ER. Great thing for me to read 5 minutes after I'd done the same damn thing - I told my friend not to leave, I was gonna be hospitalized.

Didn't happen - sheer will. 6 hours of screaming, tossing, legs kicking. I had to delurk - had to. Please please don't fool with this if you've been on opoids any length of time: IT CLEANS THEM OUT OF YOUR SYSTEM ENTIRELY. Not kidding. My BP went through the floor - gasping for breath 5 hours in. I'd taken phenergan to stop the inevitable vomiting, it saved my cakes and ultimately knocked me out.

I've had major surgeries that were a walk in the park compared to these six hours. (tears) If this helps any of you for it not to happen - then amen.

EDIT: crushing it releases some godawful stuff one helluva lot like Narcan. No crush? Goes through your system and you never know it's there - I'm on day 2 of the crap now, no more incidences as I'm taking the damn things. Which are good for 9 out of 12 hours, then you hosed.

Sounds horrible but I'm really surprised your doctor prescribed this to you knowing that you have been on Opiates long term and that one of the ingredients of this is Naltrexone. Nasty stuff

Sounds like a sketchy doctor... how could he not know that you would go into precipitated withdrawal from naltrexone? Naltrexone is an opiate antagonist which means it reverses the action of opiates at the receptors. If you are currently on opiates at all, it will send you into rapid and intense withdrawal. Also as far as I know, it doesn't do anything for pain, but I could be wrong about that.

In itself it's not particularly dangerous... that's the reason you had a bad reaction. But sounds ridiculous to prescribe it to you.

He or somebody else (nurse, pharmacist) should have warned you about the naltrexone, not crushing it, and what to do if cant swallow. You can open up the caps and pour in applesauce (pretty sure thats the recommendation of which food to use) and swallow immediately followed by swishing some water around your mouth and swallowing.

Not sure how much Opana you were taking but his conversion for analgesic equivalency may have been off hence why you arent getting full effect.

Some good knowledge here. That must have been a terrible experience. Hopefully someone can learn from this. I edited your title to include the proper drug names.
