Tonight's the Mass Debate 8) : Howard vs Rudd

It's on pay TV's Sky News Channel, 7:30pm - 9pm (NOT sure if any free to air channel is showing it live too?)

Rudd should win,if history is anything to go by.I can't remember the last,if anytime Howard actually won one since he's been prime minister.Mind, you Howard has only agreed to one (mass)debate(Rudd & Labor want three),made all the rules, and threatened if Rudd didn't show up,Howard would talk for the whole 1 & 1/2 hours - That would be a bloody scary and boring thought.

If by some chance Howard wins the (mass)debate it shouldn't make a huge difference to the polls, unless of course some people choose to be hypocrites - nothing would surprise in this day and age 8o .But,I guess we will have to wait and see.......

The ABC's 8:25 - 9:05pm timeslot is "to be advised", I hope that's it. If its not on free to air that's fucked up.

Uh, maybe from the $1.6+ billion trade deficit, which we have in the middle of a resources boom?!?!?
NB: I know nothing about economics, but you say that like it is the big number, have you checked the Trade deficit for other developed nation, US/UK/France/Russia et al? all dwarf Australias significantly (ie alots more than could be pinned on population difference)

This article is in Aus DD but I thought it was relevant to the 'Howard is a douch' discussion ;)
I was right on 'evil' drugs, says PM
October 18, 2007

PRIME Minister John Howard has launched a passionate attack on illicit drugs and a strenuous defence of his own zero tolerance attitudes, saying the Australian community has finally caught up with him in recognising that marijuana is evil.

Campaigning in the marginal Brisbane electorate of Moreton yesterday, Mr Howard let fly over community and political tolerance for so-called recreational and party drugs.

His outburst follows the travails of AFL football star Ben Cousins, and also recent controversy over a school playground incident where young children in NSW are suspected to have taken ecstasy tablets.

Mr Howard said more appropriate names should be applied to illicit substances.

"I think one of the things we have to do is stop glamorising them by calling them recreational drugs or party drugs. All drugs are evil."

"I have for 11½ years preached a policy of zero tolerance. It was ridiculed eight or nine years ago, even by people in my own party. They were wrong. And many people in the Labor Party were wrong.

"They wanted to legalise marijuana. I was always opposed to that. At long last the community, in some ways, has come to its senses on marijuana."

Mr Howard said that drug law enforcement was a state issue, but Canberra had intensified efforts to educate the community by running "very provocative ads" about the dangers of drug taking, and providing extra funds to combat the use of "ice".

"They are evil, all of them, and there should be an uncompromising social condemnation of drugs," Mr Howard said.

The Prime Minister, a former tobacco smoker, said Australians needed to change their attitude towards drug users.

"Why can't we have the same attitude towards drugs that a large section of the community has developed towards tobacco?" he said.

"I mean it's become virtually a criminal offence for people to smoke. I used to smoke and thank heavens I gave it up a long time ago. Now you are a pariah if you smoke."

Narrow minded dinosaur!

smart narrow minded dinosaur. it's one of the few issues that he's actually not out of touch with in regard to ordinary australians. i guess if he has to undergo surgery later in life he'll eschew anaesthesia and just bite down on a stick, like they used to do back in the days where his head is at

Kevn 07's drug policy is even more narrow minded

Zero Tolerance, No opportunity for Harm Reduction

I wonder what Howard would put forward to replace the terms 'party/recreational drugs'. Satan's lure? Early graves? If you take these you'll descend into barbarism? It seems to be his MO.

It's things like this that make me happy I vote green. I'm so Green, Bob Brown is my friend on Facebook.

PS If anyone finds a link for downloading/streaming the complete debate, could they possibly post it here? I've had a good look but all I can find is highlights.

I wonder what the truth is behind that worm thing.

I agree that I dont think it should be OK for Howard to decide if it should be used or not............its got nothing to do with him.

I did tune in for the last 2 minutes last night and saw it was on............I was surprised but even more surprised by the channel nine call that someone unplugged there leads............I mean are they serious? Do they really expect us to believe that someone from the liberal party can get control over there broadcast.

I would like to see proof of that statement.

I also was listening to some talk back radio today and heard that apparently each time Howard said the first word in a sentence that the worm would instantly go down and whenever Rudd said the first word that his would instantly go up..................now doesnt this tell us immediately that the worm is a fuckin joke................... basing a winner or loser on the stupid worm is like saying the earth is flat............ I mean, lets get serious.

Finally...........Im rather surprised that anyone is actually interested in listening to the twats talking for an hour and a half...........really......whats with that?

i doubt its possible to have a drugs policy which is more narrow minded that Howards zero tolerance policies.

"They are evil, all of them, and there should be an uncompromising social condemnation of drugs," - that says it all.

Howard and his minions have openly declared their opposition tho Harm Reduction every single chance they have had to speak publicly on the issue. They pride themselves on closing down safe injecting rooms and increasing penalties for use and possession. Also, see Chris Pynes idiotic statements on the average contents of ecstacy in Australia: "most pills contain Hydrocloric acid." (I'll link the debate between Pyne and Dr. Caldicott later)

I challenge anyone to find comparable statements by anyone in the Labor camp.

Although Rudd's stance on zero tolerance is close to being as bad as Howards, "all drugs are EVIL" position, and equally uninspired, there is NOTHING as bad as Howards public fear mongering on drugs. As the man himself says, he's had a personal vandetta against drugs and drug users since he entered politics! A statement as narrowminded and explicitly based on hatred and fear of a (large) drug taking community like Howards just shows how fucked up the Liberal party really is. Gubby, discraseful politics at its absolute finest :\

Anyone heard about a website quiz kinda thing that you choose from different options/policies that both parties put out and at the end it tells you who you should vote for. Mum was telling me bout it the other day but i cant find it anywhere.

Im seriously stuck, purely cause i dont know that much about it all, not saying that each party will actually ever go ahead with what they say they are going to do, i'd just be interested with the outcome.

I think you may be talking about this....

he practicaly said that when interviewed on triple j last month

^So your saying that Labor has a harsher drugs policy than the Libs!? Are you serious! I would like to see some evidence of this..

I'm sure George Bush himself would have trouble beating Howards, "All drugs are evil" rhetoric, I can hardly see Rudd saying something as inflamatory and narrow minded as that.

Here's a few more articles/threads on the reality of the Liberal parties zero tolerance approach, and the link I promised earlier:

News - Federal MP tells SA Govt to crack down on drug testing - this one's about the liberal parties refusal to even consider pill testing as a harm minimisation strategy;

Bronwyn Bishop claiming the War on Drugs is winnable - as long as the focus moves away from harm minimisation. - this says it all.

NEWS: Adelaide Now - 1/06/07 'MP's drug ignorance disturbing: Doctor' - this is the one I was talking about where Pyne warns people not to consume e because is usually contains hydrocloric acid!

Eggman
Kevn 07's drug policy is even more narrow minded
Oh eggy, before you say Labor policy is more strict, now it's merely comparable.. please stick to your line so I can argue with you properly ;)

In other news:

All voters (especially greens voters) check this out for a major laugh: Vote bob brown
Don't be a cunt, vote Bob Brown or Fuck you

Fucking gold! :)

Yeah but the ALP has something called a left-wing and a caucus through which to influence the party, the chances of getting slightly more humane laws are much better under the ALP than the Coalition- period.

Rudd all the way.

Its been too long where we pushed talented minds and researchers, away from australia due to lack of government interest and funding, because of mining sector/boom.

Its not going to last forever, be need to get with the times. Rudd is with the times.
Although i agree with the IR reforms, John Howard is showing signs that he does not want to leave the job and will hang on at any cost.

Like the axing of channel nines broadcast of the debate.
We are in a free country and that stunt I believe is controlling the media, and how plus hes changed voteing re-enrollment, another sign of trying to rigg the systems

His abuse of the senate is unbelievable, and the war on Iraq is a total joke. John Howard thinks to highly George W Bush, hes a joke. But not the united states, as we need to keep a strong alliance with them.

Climate change Howard does not want to do anything, signing the Kayoto agreement is a step need to set the direction for the future, and we need attainable targets, even at the cost of jobs.

We need to wise up, European countries are way ahead of australia, in many aspects. Health, Paid Matiery Leave, Broadband speeds, Climate Change, Education and tailoring for new industries.

University course's rose in price due to howard = bad

Howard has been there for two long, and in turn your not voting for howard your voting for costello :P ouch

Kevin 07 all the way
