been around for awhile - the most common substance I'v heard it used to confirm is LSD I believe.

It's good for detecting indoles period - it'll detect AMT, psilocin, 5-MeO-AMT, etc.

Can it be used to distinguish them at all? Or is it just a positive-negative result? Was just thinking 5-HTP is mighty cheap...

It cannot readily distinguish between them. Most tryptamines turn it violet/red.
