EGYPT TO LEGALISE HASH TO BALANCE BUDGET?

Spreading like wildfire across the news this morning is a statement by the Chairman of Cigarette Dealers Association, suggesting the legalisation of hash in Egypt...

Egyptians are finally waking up to the realisation that Egypt would benefit from the legalisation of the use and trade of hash. Spreading virally online this morning is a statement made by the Chairman of the Cigarette Dealers Association in Cairo and Giza, Osama Salama, who believes that the legalisation would be a fast and effective way to reduce the state budget deficit within a few years.

According to Al-Masry Al Youm, Salama claims, “The government spends LE 1 billion every year to fight it, only managing to uncover around 15 percent of the total traded amount.” Furthermore the illegal trading of hashish amounts to LE 42 billion annually, constituting 2.5% of the national income.

Salama suggests a 10% tax on hash that will increase to 50% percent over 10 years. As it stands there are several scientific reports that provide evidence that there are health benefits associated with marijuana and its concentrated derivative hash, which is often used as a form of treatment for cancer patients struggling with chemotherapy. At the same time countries who have legalised marijuana have generated millions in state revenue, and if Egypt followed suit it would be able to combat the hash market monopoly held by countries like Afghanistan, Morocco, and Lebanon.

isn't egypt a strongly muslim country which basically hate all drugs?

also how can they legalise just hash? what happens if you are caught with weed. "sry son but you gotta have at least 90% THC by weight for us to let you go with that"

Islam has always been a bit wishy washy on the drugs thing. Like they initially banned caffeine back in the day, but it was so popular that they unbanned it, allegedly on the grounds that it enhanced and focused the mind so that it could focus more on prayer and God, whereas alcohol is sedating and disinhibiting and whatnot.

Likewise there's the whole complicated relationship between extremist Islamic groups in the Middle East and the opium trade which quite frequently funds their operations.

As for the weed/hash distinction, I'm pretty sure actual plant marijuana is rare in Egypt (and much of the Middle East) as a recreational drug compared to hash, so it's probably just not something they're taking into account when broaching the topic.

i think the rationalisation behind the opium trade is that its getting westerners addicted

egypt seems like one of the last places that weed would be legalised.

pretty much every country in the world would financially benefit from regulation of illicit substances. theres just too many dummies for the laws to pass in most places

That's what I thought..

yes, but historically the countries in the region have always focused more on alcohol with cannabis and opium not being demonised as much.

Hashish has a long history in the middle east so, while there are nations like Saudi Arabia which have very strict laws prohibiting hash, there are also Muslim nations like Lebanon and Iran where hashish (while technically illegal) enjoys a lot of popularity and authorities grant a large degree of leeway regarding enforcement.

If it's legalized it'd probably be more of a tax thing. Like, if you get caught with plant material it's a small ticket because obviously you didn't pay hash tax on it. Hash is simply easier to quantify, and many would argue, more medicinal ("Marijuana is the messenger, Hash is the message").
